Chapter 6 - Truth in the Courtroom

Two weeks later, the federal grand jury met in an emergency session.
Arthur Cole sat at the defense table, unaware that his private jet flight to Zurich had been grounded by the Federal Aviation Administration thirty minutes before scheduled takeoff. Two federal marshals stood stationed at the exit doors of the courtroom.
Arthur’s lead attorney stood up, looking smug. "Your Honor, this whole proceedings is a farce. My client, Arthur Cole, is a respected philanthropist and elder statesman of the New York financial community. He had no operational role in Cole Enterprises during the period in question."
The prosecutor, Susan Miller, stood up slowly. "Your Honor, the government calls Ms. Claire Bennett to the stand."
A murmur rippled through the courtroom as I walked up to the witness box, took the oath, and sat down. Arthur glared at me with pure venom, but I met his gaze with unshakeable composure.
"Ms. Bennett," Prosecutor Miller began, "can you state your relationship to Defendant Arthur Cole?"
"He is my former father-in-law," I testified clearly. "And for ten years, he operated as the silent chairman of Cole Enterprises, using his son Ethan as a public figurehead to shield himself from liability."
"Objection! Hearsay!" Arthur’s lawyer shouted.
"Overruled," the judge snapped. "The witness is a certified forensic accountant who audited the company's books."
"Ms. Bennett," Miller continued, "did you examine the internal communication servers and hardware encryption keys belonging to Arthur Cole?"
"I did," I replied, pointing to the monitor displaying digital evidence on the courtroom screens. "On August 8th, two days before my son was born, Arthur Cole personally accessed the master financial portal using a hardware key registered to his private Long Island home. He initiated two unauthorized wire transfers totaling twelve million dollars into an unmapped account in Zurich."
"And who authorized those transfers?"
"Arthur Cole forged his son’s digital credentials to execute them," I explained, scrolling through the logs on my screen. "Furthermore, when he realized I had detected the initial wire transfers, he sent a series of encrypted instructions to Bianca Thorne, instructing her to physically intercept me and retrieve my data storage drives."
Prosecutor Miller entered the text logs into evidence, along with the sworn deposition from Bianca Thorne.
Arthur’s face turned from red to dark purple. He stood up from his chair, slamming his fist onto the table. "She’s lying! That ungrateful little parasite has been planning this for years! She seduced my son, stole his company, and now she’s trying to destroy me!"
"Mr. Cole! Sit down immediately or I will hold you in contempt!" the judge ordered, banging his gavel.
"You think you’re so smart, Claire!" Arthur roared, ignoring his attorney’s desperate attempts to pull him back down. "You were nothing! A poor girl from upstate with a math degree! I built that company! Ethan was too stupid to run it, and you were supposed to stay in your place!"
The entire courtroom fell dead silent. Arthur stood panting, his outburst echoing off the mahogany walls. He realized too late what he had just admitted in open court: that he controlled the company, that Ethan was incompetent, and that he held complete authority over the firm's operations.
Prosecutor Miller smiled faintly. "No further questions, Your Honor. The government moves for immediate arrest and remand without bail for Arthur Cole on charges of wire fraud, witness tampering, and conspiracy to commit felony assault."

The judge looked at Arthur with cold contempt. "Motion granted. Marshals, take Mr. Cole into custody."
As the federal marshals moved in, Arthur collapsed back into his chair, his hands trembling as iron cuffs were secured around his wrists. For the first time in his life, Arthur Cole was stripped of his money, his status, and his power.
