Chapter 4 - The Mastermind Behind the Veil

Three weeks passed. The fallout from the court hearing sent shockwaves through Manhattan's business community. Cole Enterprises collapsed like a house of cards. With its assets frozen and its founder behind bars, the board of directors resigned en masse, and the company was forced into Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Meanwhile, Noah continued to thrive. He grew stronger every day, his tiny weight increasing steadily until Dr. Reyes finally approved his discharge from St. Matthew’s Hospital.
I brought him home to a bright, secure brownstone in Brooklyn that I had purchased two years prior under my maiden name—a sanctuary Ethan had never known existed.
Sitting in the sunlit nursery with Noah resting peacefully on my chest, I opened my laptop to review the receiver's preliminary report on Cole Enterprises. But as I read through the transaction logs, something caught my eye—a detail that hadn't fit the original fraud pattern.
There were two hidden transfers, totaling twelve million dollars, executed just forty-eight hours before Ethan’s arrest. They hadn't gone to Bianca’s Cayman account. They had been routed through an encrypted Swiss proxy to a corporate entity named "Vanguard Holdings."
I dialed Evelyn immediately.
"Evelyn, did you look at the last ledger before the asset freeze took effect?" I asked as soon as she picked up.
"Yes, the receiver sent the initial audit this morning," Evelyn replied. "Why? Did you find another hidden account?"
"Ethan didn't make those last two transfers," I said, zooming in on the IP signature. "Ethan’s digital signature was used, but the transfer protocol bypassed his usual two-factor authentication. Someone else had administrative access to his personal master key."
There was a pause on the line. "Who?"
"Arthur Cole," I said softly.
A silence hung between us. Arthur Cole had played the grieving, humiliated father in court, pretending to be shocked by his son's recklessness. But Arthur wasn't a bystander—he was the puppet master. He had allowed Ethan to take the blame for the visible, sloppy fraud while quietly siphoning twelve million dollars out of the company right as the ship went down.
"Can you prove it was Arthur?" Evelyn asked, her tone sharpening.
"Arthur bought the original firewall software for Cole Enterprises ten years ago," I explained, pulling up an old system backup from my secure drive. "He insisted on installing a hardware key at his personal estate in Long Island 'for emergency recovery.' He used that backdoor to drain the remaining capital before the federal freeze was finalized, knowing Ethan would take the fall for everything."
"That means Arthur set his own son up to be the sole scapegoat," Evelyn said, breathless.
"Arthur has always cared about one thing: the Cole family name and his personal fortune," I said. "He knew Ethan was too arrogant and careless to notice the missing twelve million. He let Ethan go to prison so he could escape to Europe with the loot."

"What's your move, Claire?"
I looked down at Noah, sleeping soundly in his crib. "Arthur thinks he’s the smartest man in the room because he’s spent forty years getting away with financial murder. It's time to show him that his legacy ends here."
