Chapter 4 - UNHOLY ALLIANCES

The rain continued to pour over Seattle as Naomi and Marcus sat inside a high-end, discreet lounge in the historic district. Maps of Carter Global’s logistics network and financial portfolios were spread across the mahogany table between them.
"If Ethan’s story holds up," Marcus said, taking a sip of his bourbon, "The Architect is using Vanguard Holdings to trigger an artificial operational failure at Carter Global. Once your cargo ships are stalled in international waters, your stock will crash to zero, and Vanguard will execute a forced takeover."
"And Uncle Julian is in on it," Naomi said, connecting the dots. "He’s been pushing to privatize the company for months."
"Julian is greedy, but he’s not smart enough to design a cyber attack of this magnitude," Marcus countered. "There’s someone else pullings the strings."
Naomi studied Marcus carefully. "You still haven't explained why you're helping me, Marcus. You were brought in as an outside consultant by Julian’s faction. What’s your angle?"
Marcus set his glass down, his expression turning serious. "Three years ago, my father owned a mid-sized logistics firm in Chicago. Vanguard Holdings executed the exact same hostile playbook on him. They fabricated a security breach, ruined his reputation, and drove his company into bankruptcy. My father didn't survive the stress... he had a fatal heart attack two weeks later. I’ve spent the last three years tracking Vanguard. I took this contract with Julian specifically to destroy Vanguard from the inside."
Naomi felt a surge of empathy mixed with newfound respect. Marcus wasn't just a corporate mercenary; he was a man driven by a deep sense of justice, much like herself.
"Then we have a common enemy," Naomi said, extending her hand. "Partner?"
Marcus took her hand, his grip warm and firm. A subtle spark of electricity passed between them—a connection born of shared pain and mutual resolve. "Partner."
Their moment was interrupted when Naomi’s phone chimed with an urgent alert from the Carter Global security operations center.
ALERT: SYSTEM BREACH DETECTED IN PACIFIC ROUTING SERVER. MANUAL OVERRIDE REQUIRED.
"It’s starting," Naomi said, springing to her feet. "They’re shutting down our ships."
They rushed to Marcus’s car and sped toward headquarters. By the time they reached the server room in the basement of the Carter skyscraper, the red alarm lights were flashing, and technicians were frantically typing on keyboards.
Standing in the center of the server room was Julian Vance, flanked by two private security guards. He was holding a flash drive connected directly to the primary mainframe.
"Julian! Step away from the console!" Naomi commanded, her voice cutting through the blaring alarms.
Julian turned around, a manic look in his eyes. "It’s too late, Naomi! Your father’s reign is over! In ten minutes, forty container ships carrying fifty billion dollars worth of goods will lose GPS guidance. The board will have no choice but to remove Richard tomorrow!"
"You fool," Marcus said, stepping forward with lethal grace. "Do you really think Vanguard is going to make you CEO? Once the network crashes, Vanguard’s legal team will hold you personally liable for the breach. You're the fall guy, Julian!"
Julian blinked, sudden doubt flashing across his face. "No... no, they promised me thirty percent of the restructured assets!"
"They lied to you, just like Ethan lied to Vanessa," Naomi said, taking a step closer. "Pull that flash drive now, Julian, or you will spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary right next to your nephew."
Panicking, Julian hesitated. But before he could make a decision, the server room door opened, and a shadowy figure stepped out from the server racks, holding a silenced pistol.
May you like
It was Victor Sterling—the Chief Technology Officer of Carter Global, a man who had worked for Naomi’s father for over fifteen years.
"Step back, both of you," Sterling said calmly, pointing the gun directly at Naomi’s chest. "Julian served his purpose, but the script calls for a permanent system shutdown."
