Chapter 7 - VANESSA’S CONFESSION

The interrogation room was cold and sterile. Vanessa sat hunched over the metal table, her glamorous facade completely stripped away. She wore a simple gray tracksuit, her hair tied in a messy knot, looking years older than she had at her lavish wedding dinner.

When Naomi entered the room with Marcus, Vanessa looked up, her eyes wide with desperation.

"Naomi," Vanessa stammered, grabbing a crumpled tissue. "Please... you have to tell them I didn't know! I swear to God, I didn't know the ring was stolen!"

Naomi sat across from her, her expression calm but firm. "You enjoyed laughing at me, Vanessa. You enjoyed sitting at that dinner table watching Ethan humiliate me."

"Because Ethan told me you were trying to ruin his business!" Vanessa cried out. "He told me you were obsessed with him, that you were sending him crazy messages threatening to ruin our wedding! I thought... I thought you were the villain!"

Naomi shook her head softly. "Ethan is a master manipulator, Vanessa. He makes everyone around him believe his lies until reality catches up."

"I found this an hour ago," Vanessa said, pushing a sleek steel box across the table. "It was hidden inside Ethan’s safe in our bedroom closet. I don't know the combination, but... I saw the Vanguard logo stamped on the bottom."

Marcus picked up the box, examining the reinforced steel edges. "This is a hardware wallet used for cold-storing cryptocurrency and encrypted documents."

"Ethan told me that if anything ever happened to him, I should take this box and fly to Zurich," Vanessa sobbed. "He said there was five million dollars in it for me. But I don't want his dirty money! I just want to go home. Please, Naomi... tell the police I helped you."

Naomi looked at Vanessa. Part of her felt a sharp sting of remembrance—she too had once been hypnotized by Ethan’s charming promises and slick excuses. Vanessa wasn't a criminal mastermind; she was just another victim discarded in Ethan’s pursuit of status.

"If you testify against Ethan and turn over all the gifts he bought you with stolen funds, I will ask my father’s legal team not to pursue civil damages against you," Naomi said quietly.

Vanessa broke down into fresh tears, nodding hysterically. "Thank you... thank you, Naomi."

Outside the room, Marcus called a friend in federal cyber forensics. "We have Ethan’s cold storage drive. If we can decrypt this wallet before tomorrow’s proxy meeting, we’ll have the exact transaction records linking Vanguard Holdings to foreign shell companies."

"Can your team break the encryption in time?" Naomi asked.

Marcus smiled, a dangerous glint in his eye. "We don't need to break it. Ethan was lazy. I guarantee he used a biometric hash linked to his personal devices. And lucky for us, Ethan is currently sitting in a cell downstairs."

Ten minutes later, with a court order signed by an emergency judge, federal agents brought Ethan into the forensic lab.

Ethan’s face went pale as he saw Naomi and Marcus standing next to his hidden steel box.

"No... you can't open that!" Ethan screamed, trying to pull away from the guards. "That’s private property!"

"Press his thumb against the scanner," Marcus instructed the technician calmly.

Despite Ethan’s frantic struggling, the agent pressed Ethan’s thumb to the reader. The steel box clicked open with a soft mechanical hiss.

Inside lay a collection of encrypted drives and a ledger detailing offshore payments made directly from Vanguard Holdings to Ethan’s private accounts in the Cayman Islands—including explicit instructions on how to use the Carter Diamond to frame Richard Carter for insurance fraud.

Naomi looked down at the documents, her eyes flashing with cold triumph. "It’s over, Ethan. You didn't just steal a diamond. You signed your own life sentence."
