Chapter 6 - COUNTEROFFENSIVE

With Sterling in custody and Julian Vance singing like a canary to federal prosecutors in exchange for a plea deal, the narrative surrounding Carter Global flipped overnight.
The media, which had previously speculated on the downfall of the Carter family, was now covering the dramatic unraveling of an international corporate espionage ring. Naomi’s stock as a sharp, fearless executive soared. The image of her calmly handling Ethan’s public spectacle was now viewed as the defining moment of a brilliant leader who refused to break under pressure.
Inside the Carter boardroom, Naomi, Richard, and Marcus sat around a war table.
"Vanguard Holdings is holding an emergency proxy vote in forty-eight hours," Marcus explained, projecting a financial matrix onto the screen. "They believe that despite Sterling’s arrest, Carter Global is vulnerable enough for them to force a buyout at thirty dollars a share."
"We need to buy back our floating shares before the market opens tomorrow," Richard said. "But we’re short three hundred million dollars in liquid capital."
Naomi smiled—a confident, sharp smile that reminded Richard of her mother. "We don't need three hundred million dollars in cash, Dad. We have something better. We have the Carter Diamond."
Marcus looked intrigued. "What are you proposing, Naomi?"
"The diamond is valued at four point two million dollars, but its historical significance and rarity make it priceless as collateral," Naomi explained. "I’ve spent the morning speaking with European private equity funds. If we pledge the Carter collection as a guarantee, Sovereign Wealth Capital is willing to extend us a five-hundred-million-dollar credit line instantly."
Marcus stared at Naomi, genuine admiration shining in his eyes. "That’s a masterstroke. You’re using the very diamond Ethan stole to fund the counter-acquisition of Vanguard’s shares."
"Ethan wanted to use my family’s heritage to humiliate me," Naomi said quietly. "Now that heritage is going to save us."
Later that evening, after hours of finalizing contracts with international bankers, Naomi and Marcus found themselves on the balcony of the Carter penthouse overlooking the glittering skyline of Seattle.
The rain had stopped, leaving the night air crisp and clear.
Marcus walked up beside her, handing her a glass of red wine. "You were incredible today, Naomi."
Naomi took a sip, looking out at the illuminated Space Needle. "Eight months ago, when Ethan walked out of my life, he told me I was weak. He said I was just a sheltered heiress who couldn't survive without his ambition."
"Ethan Vance is a blind coward who wouldn't recognize true strength if it threw dressing over his head," Marcus said softly, stepping closer. "You are the most formidable woman I’ve ever met."
Naomi turned to face him. The ambient light caught the sharp lines of Marcus’s jaw and the deep warmth in his eyes. For the first time in years, Naomi felt a fluttering in her chest that had nothing to do with fear or corporate warfare.
"Thank you, Marcus," she whispered. "For standing by me. For protecting me."
"I’ll always stand by you, Naomi," Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave. He reached out, gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear.

For a lingering moment, they stood inches apart, the tension between them shifting from professional solidarity to undeniable personal attraction. But before their lips could meet, Naomi’s phone chimed.
It was an emergency summons from the federal prosecutor. Vanessa Vance—Ethan’s desperate bride—had just arrived at the precinct with a vault keybox that Ethan had hidden in her luxury condo.
