Chapter 3 - The Cornered Animal

Driven into a corner, Graham Voss did what he had always done best: he tried to lie, manipulate, and play the victim.

Two days after the wedding collapse, Graham appeared on a national prime-time news program for an exclusive interview. He wore a dark blue suit, dropped his head, and put on his best performance as an abused, misunderstood ex-husband.

"Mara Ellison is conducting a personal vendetta against me and my new wife," Graham told the interviewer, leaning forward with tears welling in his eyes. "She never accepted our divorce. She spent six years obsessing over my success, concocting fake documents and bribing former employees to ruin the happiest day of my life. Monroe Wellness is a legitimate, groundbreaking company, and we will fight these fraudulent liens with everything we have."

Sitting in Rachel Kim’s high-rise legal office, Rachel chuckled as she paused the television broadcast.

"He really thinks public opinion will save him from a federal financial audit," Rachel said, shaking her head. "He’s delusional."

"He’s not delusional, Rachel. He’s terrified," I replied. "He knows the Department of Justice opened an investigation this morning into his Delaware holding companies."

Suddenly, Rachel’s intercom buzzed. Her receptionist’s voice came through, sounding panicked. "Ms. Kim, Mr. Voss is in the lobby. He’s screaming at the guards and demanding to see Ms. Ellison."

Before Rachel could reply, the heavy glass doors of the executive suite burst open.

Graham charged into the room, his tie undone, his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot. Two security guards were right behind him, trying to grab his arms.

"Out!" Graham yelled at the guards, thrashing around. "Get your hands off me! Mara! You bitch!"

"Let him speak, security," I said quietly, standing up from my chair. The guards hesitated but stepped back, blocking the exit door just in case.

Graham straightened his jacket, breathing heavily. He looked at me with a terrifying mixture of hatred and desperation.

"You think you won?" Graham sneered, taking a step toward me. "You think you’re smart, Mara? You’re nothing! You were nothing when I met you, and you’re nothing now!"

"And yet, you’re the one standing in my lawyer’s office, facing twenty years in federal prison for fraud," I replied, my voice steady.

"I offered you a life!" Graham shouted, his voice cracking. "I took care of your pathetic father while he was dying! I handled his medical bills!"

"You handled his bills using his own stolen bank accounts, Graham," I said, pulling a stack of audited bank statements from my folder and tossing them onto the conference table. "We found the wire transfers from three weeks before he passed away. You stole fifty thousand dollars from his personal treatment fund to pay for your first luxury car."

Graham stared at the documents, his jaw tightening. "He was going to die anyway!" he spat out, completely abandoning any pretense of innocence. "He was an old man wasting money on useless machines! I turned those machines into an empire! I made them worth something!"

"They were worth something because my father was a genius," I said, stepping right up to him, looking him dead in the eye. "You are just a parasite who mistook the blood you sucked for your own strength."

Graham’s face twisted in rage. He raised his hand, pulling back his fist to strike me.

"Don't even think about it, Graham," Rachel Kim said calmly from behind her desk, holding her smartphone up. "This room is equipped with three high-definition security cameras recording directly to a secure cloud server. Strike her, and you’ll spend tonight in Rikers Island without bail."

Graham’s fist hovered in the air, trembling. He looked at the ceiling cameras, then at me, realizing he was completely trapped.

"You’re going to rot, Graham," I whispered. "And I’m going to watch every second of it."
