Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within

The fallout from Graham’s outburst in Rachel’s office was swift. The video footage of him admitting to taking money from a dying man and attempting to assault me was leaked to the press—not by us, but by one of the security guards who had been wearing a body camera.

The public narrative flipped instantly. Graham went from being seen as a target of an ex-wife's bitter vendetta to the most hated corporate villain in the country.

Investors deserted Monroe Wellness Group in droves. Board members resigned en masse. By Friday, the company’s stock had cratered by ninety-four percent, turning a multi-million-dollar empire into toxic debt.

Desperate to avoid prison, Celeste Monroe decided to save herself.

Late Friday evening, Rachel and I received an urgent call from the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Miller invited us to a private briefing.

When we arrived at the federal building, Miller met us in a glass-walled conference room.

"Ms. Ellison, Ms. Kim, thank you for coming," Miller said, shaking our hands. "I thought you should know: Dr. Celeste Monroe came into our office three hours ago with her personal criminal attorney."

"She’s turning state's evidence?" Rachel asked, taking a seat.

"She’s doing more than that," Miller smiled grimly. "She flipped completely. She handed over five years of internal Monroe Wellness accounting records, personal text messages, and recorded phone calls between her and Mr. Voss."

"What do the recordings show?" I asked.

"They show that Graham Voss explicitly instructed his accountants to fabricate medical trial results for the equipment they were using in their clinics," Miller said, his face grave. "Not only did he steal your father’s patent designs, Ms. Ellison, but to cut manufacturing costs, he altered the safety sensors on the recovery machines to save twelve hundred dollars per unit."

A cold dread settled in my stomach. "The safety sensors? Those sensors prevent post-surgical tissue burns and deep vein thrombosis!"

"We know," Miller said. "And according to the documents Dr. Monroe provided, at least fourteen patients across three clinics suffered severe post-operative complications over the last eighteen months. Graham paid them off using confidential non-disclosure agreements funded by shell accounts."

I sank back into my chair, my heart aching. My father had spent his entire life creating technology to heal human beings, to ease their pain after surgery. Graham had corrupted his life’s work, turning life-saving tools into dangerous hazards just to line his pockets with gold.

"He didn't just ruin lives financially," I whispered, tears of anger rising in my eyes. "He put people in danger."

"He did," Miller agreed. "Which is why the federal grand jury just handed down a sealed criminal indictment. Graham Voss is being charged with wire fraud, grand larceny, corporate perjury, and reckless endangerment."

"When are you picking him up?" Rachel asked.

Miller looked at his watch. "Right now."
