Chapter 6 - The Auction of the Century

Six months later, the federal bankruptcy court held a public asset auction for the liquidated remains of Monroe Wellness Group.
The grand court room was filled with venture capitalists, private equity firms, and medical conglomerates, all hoping to buy the physical clinics and clinical infrastructure for pennies on the dollar.
Celeste Monroe sat in the gallery with her legal team. As part of her plea agreement, she had surrendered her medical license, paid a two-million-dollar fine, and agreed to three years of probation. Her family’s fortune was gone, her reputation destroyed, but she had avoided prison time by handing Graham over to the authorities.
When the judge called the auction to order, the court administrator stood up to read the opening bids for the clinic chain and its associated equipment patents.
"We will begin the bidding for the clinical assets and medical IP of Monroe Wellness Group at twenty million dollars," the administrator announced.
A representative from a massive healthcare corporation raised his paddle. "Twenty million."
"Twenty-five million," bid a private equity firm from Chicago.
"Thirty million," shouted another bidder.
I sat in the middle row, wearing a tailored navy suit, holding my bidding paddle calmly in my lap. Sitting next to me was Julian Vance—a brilliant, highly respected venture capitalist who had known my father decades ago and had partnered with me to form Ellison Health Systems.
"Are you ready, Mara?" Julian whispered with a warm smile.
"I’ve been ready for six years, Julian," I replied.
I raised my paddle. "Fifty million dollars."
The courtroom went quiet. Bidders turned around to stare at me.
"Fifty million dollars to the gentlewoman in the center row," the administrator said, surprised. "Do I have fifty-five?"
The corporate representative raised his paddle. "Fifty-five million."
I didn't hesitate. "Seventy-five million."
Murmurs rippled through the room. Celeste turned her head, staring at me with a mixture of shock and awe. She had spent years believing I was broke, powerless, and hopeless. Now she was watching me deploy seventy-five million dollars of capital backed by top-tier ethical investors who believed in my vision.
The corporate representative shook his head and lowered his paddle. No one else dared to raise theirs.
"Seventy-five million going once... twice... sold!" the judge slammed the gavel down. "The assets, clinics, and original patents of Monroe Wellness are officially awarded to Ellison Health Systems."

Tears pricked my eyes as the gavel hit the wood.
I didn't just win back what was stolen. I took the entire infrastructure built on lies and reclaimed it in my father's honor.
