Chapter 1 - The Badge and the Poison

The silence inside the grand ballroom of Bellefleur Manor was absolute, heavy enough to drown out the hum of the crystal chandeliers. Three hundred guests—captains of industry, politicians, and socialites—stood frozen as the young man in the caterer’s jacket held up a gold-embossed leather wallet.

The badge inside caught the light.

"Special Agent Alexander Vance, Federal Criminal Investigation Division," his voice echoed, smooth, dangerous, and utterly stripped of the deferential tone he had worn moments ago while serving champagne. "This ballroom is now a federal crime scene. Everyone stay where you are."

Grant Blackwood stepped forward, his face flushed with indignation, though a twitch near his left eye betrayed his sudden terror. "Are you insane? Do you have any idea who my mother is? She’s Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood! You’re a hired waiter—"

"I was a waiter until ten minutes ago, Mr. Blackwood," Alexander replied without looking up from where he knelt beside Elena. He kept one hand firmly pressed against her neck, monitoring her erratic, thready pulse. With his other hand, he expertly pulled a pair of sterile gloves from his pocket and scooped the fallen amber vial into a small biohazard bag. "Your mother just administered a controlled, lethal neurotoxin into a woman whose medical condition she actively sabotaged."

"It was sugar!" Evelyn shrieked, though her voice lacked its usual icy authority. Her flawless posture crumbled as she backed toward her eldest son, Julian. "I was giving her wine! The girl was throwing a hysterical fit to ruin my son's wedding! Julian, tell this fake policeman to remove his hands from your brother’s fiancée!"

Julian Blackwood looked at his new bride, Chloe, whose face was as white as her twenty-thousand-dollar silk gown. He did not move. He was a politician by training, and he knew when a ship was taking on water.

"Grant," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible through the thick haze dulling her senses. Her vision was narrowing into a dark, suffocating tunnel. "My... my pump... the insulin..."

Grant didn't reach for her. He looked down at her bleeding waist, then at the trash bin where her lifeline was buried under lobster carcasses and grease. "Elena, just stop talking. Let the doctors handle this. Don't make a bigger scene."

Alexander’s eyes flashed with lethal coldness as he glanced at Grant. "You are an utter disgrace," he said softly.

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder until red and blue lights flashed through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of Bellefleur Manor. Emergency medical technicians stormed into the ballroom, led by two federal officers in tactical gear.

"She’s in severe hypoglycemic shock coupled with acute chemical toxicity," Alexander barked orders to the paramedics with practiced precision. "Her continuous glucose monitor was forcibly removed. Administer IV dextrose immediately and prepare a gastric lavage. The toxin is a synthetic sedative—likely a concentrated derivative of paralytic cardiac depressants."

As the paramedics lifted Elena onto the gurney, her hand slipped weakly from the edge of the sheet. Alexander caught her fingers, giving them a firm, reassuring squeeze.

"Hang on, Elena," he murmured, his voice dropping into a warmth meant only for her. "I’ve been watching them for six months. I won't let them hurt you anymore."

Evelyn attempted to slip toward the private exit behind the head table, but two federal officers stepped into her path, hand cuffs clicking sharply open.

"Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood," Alexander declared, standing up to his full height and turning to face the matriarch. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence."

Gasps erupted across the room. Flashbulbs began to go off as guests pulled out hidden phones.

"This is a mistake!" Evelyn screamed as the steel cuffs clamped around her manicured wrists. "Julian! Grant! Do something!"

Julian turned his back on his mother, fixing his tie with trembling hands. Grant simply stared at the floor, unable to face the woman he had failed to protect—or the brother whose shadow he had lived in for so long.

As Elena was wheeled out into the cool night air, the last thing she saw was Alexander Vance watching her with fierce, protective eyes—a stranger who had saved her life when her own family had let her bleed.
