Chapter 6 - The Verdict

It took the jury less than two hours to reach a verdict.
"On the first count of Attempted Premeditated Murder in the First Degree," the jury foreman read aloud, "we find the defendant, Evelyn Thorne-Blackwood... guilty."
"On the second count of Aggravated Assault with a Lethal Weapon... guilty."
"On the third count of Tampering with Physical Evidence... guilty."
Evelyn dropped into her chair as if she had been shot. The court officers immediately stepped forward, pulling her arms behind her back to apply heavy iron handcuffs.
"Julian! Grant!" she shrieked, looking wildly around the room. "Do something! You're Blackwoods!"
But Julian was already being escorted out of the courtroom by federal agents, arrested on separate charges of corporate extortion and witness tampering for his role in blackmailing Elena’s father.
Grant stood near the exit doors, pale, hollow, and utterly ruined. As his mother was led away in chains, he looked across the aisle at Elena.
Elena met his gaze. She didn't look at him with anger or hatred. She looked at him with complete indifference. That was the final blow. Grant turned and practically ran from the courthouse, hounded by dozens of news cameras.
Outside on the courthouse steps, a swarm of reporters surrounded Elena and Alexander.
"Miss Elena! How do you feel about the verdict?"
"Agent Vance, is this the end of the Blackwood empire?"
Elena stepped up to the microphones. She looked out over the sea of cameras, her posture straight, her eyes bright and clear.
"For a long time, people in power told me that my illness made me weak," Elena spoke clearly into the microphones. "They told me to hide my pump, to hide my pain, and to apologize for staying alive. Today, the justice system proved that cruelty is not strength, and money is not immunity. To anyone out there living with an invisible battle: never hide who you are to make uncomfortable people comfortable."

The reporters erupted into applause.
Alexander stood beside her, his hand resting gently against the small of her back, a proud, beautiful smile on his face.
