Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within

Three weeks before the preliminary trial, a sudden strike came from an unexpected angle.
Elena was meeting with her civil attorney downtown when her phone buzzed with an urgent text from Alexander: Don't return to the apartment. Meet me at the federal office immediately.
When Elena arrived at the Federal Bureau headquarters, Alexander led her into a glass-walled conference room. Inside sat Chloe, her head buried in her hands, weeping uncontrollably.
"What's going on?" Elena asked, looking between Alexander and her sister.
"Your father," Alexander said grimly. "Julian Blackwood offered him a deal. In exchange for lifting a predatory loan the Blackwood Group held against your father’s logistics company, your father signed a sworn statement claiming you have a history of fabricated medical emergencies and drug abuse."
Elena felt as though the air had been kicked from her lungs. "My... my father?"
Chloe looked up, tears streaming down her face. "Dad did it this morning, Elena! Julian threatened to bankrupt him! Dad said... Dad said you were strong enough to survive this scandal, but his business wouldn't survive bankruptcy!"
Elena leaned against the conference table, her hand gripping the edge until her knuckles turned white. Her own father had traded her credibility and her safety to protect his bank balance.
"He sold me," she whispered, her voice cracking. "He sold me out to the family that tried to murder me."
Alexander’s hands were on her shoulders in an instant, grounding her, pulling her into his firm chest. "He tried to," Alexander corrected coldly. "But he forgot one detail. We already seized the Blackwood Group’s internal communications."
He turned to a computer terminal on the table and tapped a key. An audio file began to play.
Julian's voice: "Sign the affidavit, Mr. Vance. Claim your daughter is an addict who threw herself on the floor to frame my mother. Do that, and the six-million-dollar debt on your company disappears. Refuse, and I will destroy you by Monday."
Elena’s father's voice: "Give me the pen."
The recording ended.
Elena stood frozen, the harsh reality sinking in. The betrayal burned, but beneath the pain, a cold, unshakeable rage began to take root.
"They think they can buy everyone," Elena said, wiping a rogue tear from her eye. "They think loyalty, truth, and lives are just items on a ledger."
"They do," Alexander said softly, looking at her with fierce pride. "So let’s show them what money can't buy."
Chloe stood up, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of her coat. "I’m divorcing Julian," she announced, her voice filled with a sudden, sharp clarity. "I handed my phone to Agent Vance an hour ago. I recorded Julian admitting that Evelyn kept the amber vial in her purse for weeks waiting for an opportunity to use it on Elena."
Elena looked at her sister. For the first time since the night at Bellefleur Manor, she saw a spark of genuine courage in Chloe’s eyes.

"You did that?" Elena asked softly.
"I let you down once," Chloe said, stepping forward and taking Elena’s hand. "I’ll never let them hurt you again. Even if it means tearing down both our families."
