Chapter 1 - The Signature on the Ink

The black ink on the birth certificate dried in the sterile, fluorescent glow of the maternity ward corridor.
I stared at the name written in sharp, disciplined cursive: LUKA MORETTI.
"Are you insane?" I whispered, my voice trembling as I pulled my newborn daughter closer against my chest. "You can't just sign a government document! I don't even know who you are!"
Luka didn't flinch. He handed the leather folder back to the stunned nurse, who looked between the giant, tattooed man and my thin, gown-clad frame in utter bewilderment.
"Your husband—ex-husband, as of three minutes ago—forfeited his parental rights the moment he walked out that door with Julian Vance's daughter," Luka said smoothly. His voice was deep, resonant, and carried a quiet authority that silenced the busy hospital hallway.
My heart skipped a beat. "Julian Vance's daughter?"
My ex-husband, Mark Sterling, had left with a blonde woman named Chloe. I had known her as his firm’s junior partner. I had no idea she was the daughter of Julian Vance—the billionaire founder of Vance Pharmaceutical, the largest medical conglomerate in the tri-state area.
"How do you know who she is?" I demanded, my knuckles white against my baby's blanket. "How do you know my name?"
Luka adjusted the cuffs of his black leather jacket, revealing a faded scar running across his wrist beneath his heavy black ink tattoos. "Because three years ago, your late father, Dr. Arthur Miller, was the chief research director at Vance Pharma. And he didn't die of a sudden heart attack, Clara."
The corridor seemed to tilt beneath my feet.
My father’s death three years ago had broken me. He had been working late at the laboratory when his heart allegedly stopped. Mark had been the one who handled the estate, urging me to sell my father’s small independent research lab to Vance Pharma for pennies on the dollar.
"What are you saying?" I rasped, tears brimming in my eyes.
"I’m saying your husband married you to get his hands on your father’s research archives," Luka said coldly. "And when he realized the most valuable piece of that research wasn't in the lab, but hidden inside your family’s medical records under file code M-17, he realized he didn't need you anymore."
Luka stepped closer, towering over me, yet his posture softened as he looked down at the tiny baby sleeping in my arms.
"My car is at the private entrance," Luka said gently. "Mark and Chloe have already notified the hospital administration to discharge you without aid. They want you destitute, Clara. They want you desperate enough to sign over your father’s remaining trust."
"And why are you helping me?" I challenged, searching his icy blue eyes. "What do you get out of this, Luka?"
May you like
Luka looked directly into my eyes, his expression utterly unreadable.
"Your father saved my life ten years ago when I was just a kid on the streets," Luka revealed quietly. "He gave me a second chance. I promised him before he died that I would guard his daughter and grandchild with my life. Now, get your coat. The storm is coming."
