Chapter 6 - The Turn of the Tide

Smoke grenades rained down from the shattered roof, exploding across the warehouse floor with blinding white light and thick grey smoke.

"DOWN!" Luka yelled, grabbing my arm and pulling me behind the heavy concrete pillar as gunshots echoed wildly through the rafters.

Sirens wailed in the distance—not police sirens, but the heavy, low horns of private federal enforcement vehicles.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"

Victoria Vance stepped through the broken side entrance of the warehouse, holding a bullhorn, accompanied by ten armed agents wearing badges from the Food and Drug Administration's Criminal Investigation Division.

Mark panicked, dropping his legal folder as he tried to sprint toward the rear exit, but Luka darted out from behind the pillar like a panther.

Luka tackled Mark across a wooden worktable, sending glass vials and dust flying, pinning Mark’s arms behind his back with terrifying strength.

"Get off me!" Mark screamed, his face pressed against the dusty wood. "Clara, tell him to stop! I'm your husband!"

I walked slowly out of the smoke, holding my father’s letter and the encrypted drive tightly against my chest. I looked down at the man who had left me bleeding and broken in a hospital gown four days ago.

"You're not my husband, Mark," I said, my voice dead and emotionless. "You're a thief who picked the wrong family to destroy."

Julian Vance tried to slip away through the side door, but Victoria blocked his path, flanked by two federal agents holding arrest warrants.

"Hello, brother," Victoria said smoothly, holding up a thick stack of medical audit reports. "The FDA just seized your private research facility in Switzerland. Chloe is being transferred to a certified hospital under state care. And you... are going to federal prison for illegal human experimentation."

Julian slumped against his walking stick, his face draining of all color as the agents placed him in handcuffs.

Luka yanked Mark up by his collar, dragging him out into the glaring headlights of the federal vehicles outside.

As the agents led Mark toward an armored van, Mark looked back at me, terror finally breaking through his arrogant facade.

"Clara! Please!" Mark begged, tears streaming down his face. "We can fix this! What about Maya? She's my daughter!"

Luka stepped between Mark and me, towering over my ex-husband, his cold blue eyes locking onto Mark's trembling frame.

"Maya isn't your daughter, Sterling," Luka said, his deep voice carrying across the wet pavement. "She belongs to a family that actually knows how to protect her."
