Chapter 8 - The Final Courtroom Battle

Two months later, the final dissolution hearing for my marriage and the custody trial for Maya took place at the City Superior Courthouse.
The courtroom was packed with journalists, corporate lawyers, and federal observers.
Sitting at the defense table in a orange prison jumpsuit was Mark Sterling, flanked by a overworked court-appointed attorney. Julian Vance sat beside his own legal counsel in handcuffs, awaiting his federal trial.
I sat at the petitioner table alongside Victoria Vance and Luka, who wore a dark navy suit, his tattoos neatly hidden beneath his pristine collar.
Judge Evelyn Vance (no relation to Julian) banged her heavy wooden gavel on the bench.
"We are here to resolve the petition for absolute divorce, the full forfeiture of marital assets, and the permanent determination of parental rights regarding minor child Maya Miller," Judge Vance announced.
Mark’s attorney stood up weakly. "Your Honor, my client requests a court-ordered DNA test to establish paternity, as Mr. Luka Moretti’s signature on the birth certificate was fraudulently executed while my client was absent—"
"Absent?" Judge Vance interrupted, her eyes cold as steel. "Counsel, I have reviewed the hospital security footage from the day of the child's birth. Your client walked out of the maternity ward with Julian Vance's daughter while his wife was in active recovery, explicitly stating he wanted nothing to do with the child."
The courtroom murmured softly. Mark hung his head in shame.
"Furthermore," Judge Vance continued, pulling out a thick file, "federal prosecutors have provided this court with sworn affidavits showing Mark Sterling conspired to fraudulently expropriate the intellectual property of the late Dr. Arthur Miller, using marital funds to finance illegal offshore entities."
Judge Vance looked directly at Mark.
"Mr. Sterling, your conduct as a husband and a father is an absolute disgrace to the legal profession," Judge Vance declared harshly. "Under state abandonment statutes and emergency fraud provisions, this court hereby orders the immediate, unconditional dissolution of your marriage to Clara Miller."
BANG!
"All joint marital assets, real estate properties, and bank accounts are hereby awarded exclusively to Clara Miller as restitution," the judge continued. "Furthermore, Mark Sterling's parental rights are permanently and irrevocably terminated."
Mark raised his head, tears of utter ruin streaming down his cheeks. "Your Honor, please...!"
"Silence!" Judge Vance barked. She then turned her gaze toward Luka.
"Regarding minor child Maya Miller," Judge Vance spoke, her expression softening. "Mr. Luka Moretti’s legal status as father, established on the original birth certificate, is hereby permanently ratified by this court. He is granted full co-guardianship alongside Clara Miller."
BANG!
"Court is adjourned!"

The courtroom erupted into applause. Victoria smiled warmly, shaking my hand, while federal guards escorted Mark and Julian out the side doors toward waiting prison vans.
I looked at Luka as he stood beside me. The man who had entered my life as a tattooed stranger had just become the official, legal guardian of my daughter’s future.
