Chapter 7 - The Letter from the Past

By 2:00 AM, we were back at the estate in the Pines.

The house was quiet. Maya was sleeping peacefully in her nursery, her small chest rising and falling softly under a warm pink blanket.

I sat near the fireplace in the living room, holding the letter my father had left in the secret lab compartment. Luka sat nearby on a leather sofa, quietly cleaning his sidearm before putting it away in his safe.

With trembling fingers, I broke the red wax seal of my father's letter and began to read:

"My dearest Clara,

If you are reading this, it means I am no longer there to protect you, and the darkness surrounding Vance Pharma has finally reached our door.

I created Project M-17 not for corporate profit, but to cure the genetic defects that stole your mother from us years ago. But when I realized Julian Vance intended to weaponize my research for illegal commercial gain, I hid the master activation sequence where no corporate lawyer could ever reach it.

I placed the trust in the hands of Luka Moretti—a young man who proved to me that loyalty is born not of blood, but of choice. Trust him, Clara. He is the guardian I chose for you when I knew my time was short.

Protect your child. Protect my legacy.

With all my love, Dad."

Tears flowed freely down my cheeks as I pressed the letter against my heart. My father hadn't died in vain. He had foreseen the storm and had left me the shield I needed to survive it.

I looked across the room at Luka. He was standing by the window, watching the rain, his broad back rigid and quiet.

"He trusted you with everything," I whispered softly.

Luka turned around slowly. "Your father gave me a life when the rest of the world saw me as garbage, Clara. I promised him I would give everything back to protect his daughter."

I stood up, walked across the room, and stood directly in front of him. For the first time, I looked closely at the dark tattoos covering his hands and neck—they weren't gang symbols, but intricate artwork depicting protective shields, phoenixes rising from ashes, and the initials A.M. hidden inside a rose on his wrist.

"Arthur Miller," I whispered, touching the small rose tattoo on his wrist. "You put my father's initials on your skin."

"He was the only father I ever had," Luka rasped softly, his icy blue eyes melting into a deep, intense warmth as he looked down at me.

Without thinking, I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around his waist, burying my face against his chest. Luka froze for a second, startled by the gesture, before his large, strong arms wrapped around me, pulling me tight against his heart.

"Thank you, Luka," I sobbed quietly against his jacket. "Thank you for not leaving us."

"Never," Luka whispered into my hair, his grip unyielding. "I'm never leaving."
