Chapter 1 - The Cold Dawn

The heater in Thomas’s sedan hummed softly, filling the cabin with warmth, but Claire could not stop shaking. She kept her head pressed against the cool glass of the window, watching the rain-slicked streets of Bellevue blur past.

When they arrived at Thomas’s estate in Medina, Dr. Sarah Evans was already waiting inside. Within an hour, Claire’s swollen lip was treated, her bruises documented with high-resolution photographs, and a neck brace was fitted to soothe her whiplash.

"The physical injuries will heal in a few weeks, Thomas," Dr. Evans said quietly in the hallway. "But the trauma... she’s in severe shock."

Sitting on the edge of the guest bed, wrapped in a plush robe, Claire stared at the ice pack in her lap. Thomas walked in, carrying a mug of warm chamomile tea.

"Detective Vance just signed off on the temporary restraining order," Thomas said softly, sitting in the armchair across from her. "Grant cannot come within five hundred yards of you, your workplace, or this property."

"He took everything, Thomas," Claire whispered, her voice rasping. "My home, my self-respect... even my mother's pearls. He looked at me like I was nothing."

Thomas reached out, gently holding her trembling hands. "Grant Mercer built his empire on a foundation of sand, Claire. He believes he owns that house, the company, and Lake Washington itself. What he doesn't know is that every major credit facility behind Mercer Development was underwritten by Bennett Capital. Your father’s legacy."

Claire looked up, her eyes wet with tears. "What are you saying?"

"I’m saying," Thomas’s eyes hardened into cold flint, "that tomorrow morning, Grant Mercer learns what it truly costs to lay a hand on my family."
