Chapter 6 - The Unraveling
Deprived of funds and facing mounting criminal charges for domestic violence and corporate fraud, Grant’s relationship with Vanessa disintegrated rapidly.
Late that evening, a loud knocking rattled the door of Grant’s hotel room. When he opened it, he found two state investigators alongside Detective Vance.
"Grant Mercer," Vance declared, stepping into the entry. "We have a warrant for the search and seizure of all electronic devices, documents, and personal valuables in your possession, linked to the active embezzlement investigation."
Vanessa backed away in horror as investigators began cataloging items. One investigator walked over to the nightstand, picking up a velvet jewelry box. He opened it, revealing the pristine pearl earrings that had belonged to Claire’s mother.
"That's mine!" Vanessa yelled, rushing forward. "Grant gave those to me!"
"Those pearls are documented stolen property from the Elaine Bennett Estate inventory," Vance said coldly, sealing the jewelry box inside an evidence bag. "Miss Cole, you are coming with us for questioning regarding possession of stolen property and conspiracy to commit wire fraud."
"What?!" Vanessa screamed, turning on Grant with vicious fury. "You told me those were yours! You lied to me! You ruined my life, you pathetic loser!"
"Vanessa, shut your mouth!" Grant snarled, stepping toward her.
"Don't move, Grant!" an officer commanded, drawing his taser.

As Vanessa was cuffed and led away crying hysterically, she threw a searing glare at Grant. "I’m talking to the prosecutor, Grant! I’m telling them everything you did! Every single transfer!"
Grant stood alone in the wrecked hotel room, listening to the echoing sound of her footsteps fading down the hallway. He had lost his company, his wealth, his mistress, and his reputation.
