Chapter 2 - The Freeze

At 8:00 AM the following morning, Grant Mercer sat in the sunlit breakfast nook of his Bellevue mansion, sipping espresso. Beside him, Vanessa wore Claire’s silk robe, scrolling casually through a luxury handbag catalog on her iPad.

"We should redecorate the master suite, Grant," Vanessa purred, tracing her fingers over the pearl necklace still resting on her collarbone. "Claire’s taste was so... pedestrian."

Grant smirked, opening his laptop to check the morning financial summaries. "Do whatever you want. She won't be coming back. I’ll have my lawyers send her a low-ball settlement draft by noon. She has no career, no independent income, and no legal leverage."

His phone suddenly buzzed on the granite counter. It was his Chief Financial Officer, Arthur Pendelton.

"Grant, we have a catastrophic issue," Arthur’s voice was panicked. "First Bank of Seattle just froze our primary liquidity line. Twelve million dollars in active payroll and vendor disbursements just bounced."

Grant stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back. "What? That’s impossible! On what grounds?"

"A legal injunction filed at 7:30 AM by Bennett Capital Trustees," Arthur replied, his voice trembling. "They’ve executed a emergency recall option on all underlying assets, citing a breach of fiduciary duty and criminal domestic violence charges filed against you."

Before Grant could respond, a second call beeped through. It was his lead project manager at the waterfront high-rise site.

"Mr. Mercer! The city building inspectors just arrived with a cease-and-desist order. They’re shutting down the entire construction site pending a forensic structural audit requested by the primary land trust!"

Grant’s heart slammed against his ribs. He gripped the edge of the table, his eyes darting to Vanessa, who was staring at him in confusion.

"Grant? What’s going on?" she asked.

Suddenly, loud knocks echoed from the front double doors. Grant strode down the hallway and ripped the door open. Standing on the stone porch were two uniformed Bellevue police officers accompanied by a process server in a charcoal suit.

"Grant Mercer?" the lead officer asked coldly. "You are being served with an emergency restraining order and a legal summons for felony domestic assault. Step back, sir."
