Chapter 9 - Reclamation

Six months later, the sun shone brightly over the blue waters of Lake Washington.
The grand mansion in Bellevue had been completely transformed. Claire had auctioned off every piece of furniture, every painting, and every fixture associated with Grant, donating the entire proceeds to a local shelter for victims of domestic violence.
In its place, she redesigned the property into the headquarters for The Elaine Bennett Foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to providing legal aid, emergency housing, and financial independence grants for women escaping abusive relationships.
On a warm afternoon, Claire stood on the back terrace, watching the calm waves lap against the shoreline. Thomas stepped out onto the patio, carrying two glasses of fresh lemonade.
"The board just approved the expansion into Oregon," Thomas said with a warm smile, handing her a glass. "You’ve built something extraordinary here, Claire."

Claire took a sip, feeling the soft lake breeze in her hair. "For eleven years, I thought my life was defined by the man I married. I thought I was safe because he was strong."
She looked at Thomas, her eyes filled with deep gratitude. "I realized I was safe because I had family who taught me how to stand on my own."
