Chapter 3 - The Shadow Partner

Across town in Thomas’s glass-walled corner office, Claire sat across from a panel of three senior corporate litigation attorneys. Spread out on the mahogany table were thick blue binders containing financial statements, tax filings, and corporate deeds going back a decade.

"When you married Grant eleven years ago, Claire," Thomas explained, turning a page in the master ledger, "your father's estate trust poured sixteen million dollars into founding Mercer Development. Grant was given operational control, but the master equity shares remained held in a revocable trust under your name—managed by me."

Claire blinked in shock. "Grant always told me he owned eighty percent of the company."

"He owned eighty percent of the voting stock of the subsidiary operating arm," Marcus Vance, the lead attorney, corrected smoothly. "However, the parent holding entity—the entity that owns the patents, the land titles, and the banking lines—is ninety percent owned by the Elaine Bennett Memorial Trust. Which belongs entirely to you."

Claire looked down at the documents. For eleven years, Grant had treated her like a helpless trophy wife, convincing her that she depended on his generosity for every dress, every vacation, and every meal.

"Grant didn't just physically assault you, Claire," Marcus continued. "Our preliminary audit shows he has been illicitly siphoning company funds into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands over the last three years—specifically transferring capital into shell corporations registered under the name of Vanessa Cole."

Claire’s eyes went wide. "Vanessa?"

"She isn't just his mistress," Thomas said coldly. "She’s his accomplice in grand larceny. They were planning to strip the trust clean and leave you with nothing."

Claire closed her eyes as a cold, sharp clarity washed over her. The pain in her lip ceased to burn; in its place grew a quiet, unwavering resolve.

"What do we do next?" Claire asked softly.

Thomas smiled a thin, dangerous smile. "Next, my dear, we take back what is yours."
