Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

The next morning, the sun rose over Richmond, but for Derek Callahan, the world was pitch black.

He had spent the night in a cheap motel on the outskirts of the city, Sloane’s relentless complaining ringing in his ears. By 8:00 AM, Derek was standing outside the headquarters of Callahan Logistics, wearing the same crumpled suit from the night before. He convinced himself that if he could just get to his office, secure his files, and talk to his board of directors, he could salvage his company.

He swiped his security badge at the glass entrance doors.

Beep. Red light.

He tried again. Beep. Red light.

"What the..." Derek muttered, banging on the glass.

The security guard inside, a man Derek had known for five years, walked over but did not open the door. Instead, he spoke through the intercom. "I'm sorry, Mr. Callahan. Your access privileges have been revoked. You are not allowed on the premises."

"Are you insane, Marcus? I'm the CEO!" Derek roared.

Before he could scream further, the automatic doors slid open. But it wasn't Marcus who stepped out. It was Arthur Pendelton, flanked by three men in pristine business suits.

"Ah, Mr. Callahan. You're early," Arthur said. "That saves us a trip. The board of directors has just concluded an emergency meeting."

"Without me?!" Derek gasped. "That's illegal! I own forty percent of the shares!"

"You owned forty percent of the shares under a proxy agreement held by the Langford Trust," Arthur clarified. "Due to your breach of the trust's moral and financial covenants, those shares have reverted back to the trustee. The board has voted unanimously to terminate your employment as CEO, effective immediately."

Just then, a sleek black town car pulled up to the curb. The door opened, and I stepped out.

I wore a tailored navy blue blazer, my hair pulled back neatly, hiding the bruises on my neck with a high-collared silk scarf. For the first time in years, I wasn't standing two steps behind Derek. I was walking ahead of him.

Derek tried to rush toward me, but Arthur’s security team blocked him.

"Vivian!" Derek yelled, his face twisted in desperation. "You're destroying my life! Everything we worked for!"

I stopped and looked at him. The man who had terrified me just twelve hours ago now looked incredibly pathetic.

"I am not destroying your life, Derek," I said calmly. "I am simply taking back mine. The board has just appointed a new Chief Executive Officer to oversee the transition and rebranding of this company."

Derek stared at me, realization dawning on him. "No... not you."

"Yes," I replied, holding his gaze. "Starting today, Callahan Logistics no longer exists. Welcome to Langford Global Transport."
