Chapter 2 - The Silent Alliance

"Ryan, listen to me," Caleb interjected quickly, his legal composure slipping into panic. "That video... it's illegal surveillance! It won't hold up in court. It was taken without consent in a private facility—"
"This is a public hospital room registered solely under my name, Caleb," Claire interrupted, her dark eyes locking onto the lawyer. "And as a former senior forensic accountant for the State Attorney's Office, I know exactly what constitutes admissible evidence when physical assault and coercion are involved."
Margaret’s face turned pale. "Claire, you pathetic little thief..."
"Enough!" Ryan roared, stepping directly between his mother and his wife. He grabbed Caleb by the lapels of his tailored suit and slammed him against the hospital room door. "If you or my mother take one more step toward my wife, I will personally throw you through that window."
"Ryan! She is ruining our family!" Margaret shrieked. "We did this for you! For the Whitmore legacy! She’s a nobody, a commoner who used you!"
"She is my wife. And that child in the nursery is our daughter," Ryan spat, releasing Caleb, who stumbled backward in fear. "Get out. Both of you. Before I call the police and hand them this file right now."
Margaret glared at Claire with pure, unadulterated venom. "You think you've won, Claire? You have nothing. The Whitmore name controls the city, the courts, and the banks. You won't see a single cent, and you'll never leave this town with that child."
"Try me, Margaret," Claire replied calmly. "You forget what my actual job was before I married your son. I didn't just audit corporations. I audited people like you."
When the door slammed shut, silence fell over Room 508. Ryan turned back to Claire, collapsing onto his knees beside her bed, burying his face in her hands.
"Claire... I'm so sorry," Ryan sobbed, his shoulders shaking. "I was so blind. I thought my mother was just overbearing... I never imagined..."
Claire looked down at her husband. She knew Ryan was weak when it came to his domineering family, but the sheer horror and genuine protection he had displayed just now proved something crucial: he wasn't part of their conspiracy.

"If you want to redeem yourself, Ryan," Claire whispered, tilting his chin up, "you have to choose right now. Me and our daughter... or the Whitmore empire."
"You," Ryan answered without a second of hesitation. "Always you."
