Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Ambush

Three days later, Margaret and Caleb launched their counter-offensive. They filed an emergency ex-parte motion in family court for temporary custody of Sophia, alleging that Claire was a violent psychiatric patient and that Ryan was being held hostage under coercion.

In the grand marble hallway of the County Courthouse, Margaret walked in wearing black lace, surrounded by high-powered attorneys and a swarm of local news reporters she had personally tipped off. She was ready to play the grieving, noble grandmother.

When Claire and Ryan walked through the doors holding hands, flanked by their own legal representative—a fierce, famed defense attorney named Victoria Sterling—the media went wild.

"Mrs. Whitmore! Is it true you attacked your mother-in-law in the hospital?" a reporter yelled.

Claire remained silent, maintaining a stoic, dignified posture.

Inside the courtroom, Judge Alexander presided. Caleb stood up immediately, looking smug. "Your Honor, we present medical reports and affidavits from two senior nurses at Saint Jude Hospital confirming that Claire Bennett exhibited extreme physical outbursts and mental instability mere hours after delivery."

"We request immediate transfer of the infant to Mrs. Margaret Whitmore for the child's safety," Caleb declared smoothly.

Judge Alexander looked over his glasses at Victoria Sterling. "Defense counsel, how do you respond?"

Victoria stood up calmly. "Your Honor, we do not merely respond. We submit exhibit A: complete, unedited audio and video footage recorded inside Room 508."

Victoria plugged a flash drive into the courtroom monitor. The entire courtroom watched in stunned silence as Margaret's venomous threats, Caleb's forced signing attempt, and the physical assault of Claire played out on the 65-inch screen.
