Chapter 1 - The Throne Crumbles

The silence that fell over the grand ballroom was absolute.
Five hundred executives, investors, and high-society socialites froze in place, their cruel chuckles dying in their throats like snuffed candle flames. The heavy crystal chandeliers seemed to hum in the sudden vacuum of sound as Chairman Arthur Vance stepped up to the podium.
At seventy-one, Arthur Vance possessed the kind of aura that made powerful men sweat through their bespoke suits. Dressed in a dark double-breasted charcoal tuxedo, his silver hair brushed neatly back, his piercing blue eyes swept over the frozen crowd before fixing dead-on Julian.
Julian instantly straightened his posture, frantically adjusting his silk tie. A nervous, oily smile plastered across his face as he reached for the microphone.
"Chairman Vance!" Julian declared, his voice trembling slightly over the speakers. "We... we didn't expect you to grace us with your presence tonight! I was just keeping the event orderly. My wife had a bit too much to drink and created a scene—"
Arthur didn't even look at Julian.
He reached out, grabbed the microphone stand, and pulled it toward himself. His voice echoed through the massive room, deep, steady, and colder than arctic ice.
"I have spent fifty years building Vance Technologies," Arthur began, his tone resonating off the marble walls. "I built this firm on precision, integrity, and absolute accountability. Tonight was supposed to mark the transition of leadership to a man I believed possessed those qualities."
Julian puffed his chest out, casting a triumphant glance toward Sienna, who was hastily trying to smooth down her silver dress.
"However," Arthur continued, his eyes darkening into pure rage, "in less than ten minutes, Julian Miller has shown this entire room that he is not a leader. He is a coward, a fraud, and a violent disgrace."
The crowd gasped in unison. Julian’s fake smile completely collapsed. "Chairman... sir! I assure you, it was just a minor domestic disagreement—"
"Shut your mouth," Arthur commanded. The sheer authority in those three words made Julian flinch as if he had been struck.
Arthur turned his gaze toward the base of the stage, where I stood dusting off my navy gown, my left elbow bruised and throbbing. The terrifying billionaire’s expression melted instantly into profound tenderness and fury.
"Security," Arthur barked into the microphone.
Four imposing security guards in dark suits immediately stepped from the wings, boxing Julian and Sienna in against the podium.
"Escort Miss Sienna Vance—no relation to my family—out of this building," Arthur commanded. "She is fired, effective immediately, for gross misconduct. If she sets foot on company property again, she will be arrested for criminal trespassing."
Sienna’s face turned white as paper. "Julian! Do something!" she shrieked as two guards grabbed her arms, dragging her off the stage while the crowd watched in stunned horror.
"As for you, Julian," Arthur said, turning his lethal gaze back to my husband. "You think you were appointed CEO tonight because of your brilliant mind. You believed you were untouchable."

Arthur pointed a steady, trembling finger at me.
"You are sitting in that seat for one reason, and one reason only: because my daughter, Clara Vance, asked me to give her husband a chance eight years ago."
