Chapter 5 - Shadows Over the Estate

While Julian was plotting his desperate betrayal, I was trying to rebuild my life at my father’s sprawling estate in Greenwich, Connecticut.
The estate was a sanctuary—rolling green lawns, towering oak trees, and a grand stone mansion surrounded by high security walls. For the first time in years, I felt safe. I spent my days working alongside Jonathan Hayes, untangling the financial mess Julian had left behind, and preparing the legal strategy for our divorce.
On Thursday evening, Arthur and I sat in the grand library, enjoying tea by the roaring stone fireplace.
"How is your elbow, sweetheart?" Arthur asked gently, setting his cup down.
"It's just a light bruise now, Dad," I smiled, pulling my sweater sleeve down. "The doctor said I don't even need the brace anymore."
Arthur looked at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of pride and quiet sorrow. "I'm sorry, Clara. I should have looked closer into Julian’s background three years ago. I let my desire to see you settled blind me to what he was becoming."
"You didn't do this, Dad," I said, reaching over to squeeze his hand. "Julian made his own choices. He had every opportunity to be an honest, loving man, and he chose greed."
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the library swung open.
Chief Information Officer Marcus Reed stepped inside, his face pale and his expression grave. He held a secure tablet in his hands.
"Chairman. Miss Vance," Marcus said quickly. "We have a critical breach."
Arthur stood up immediately. "What happened?"
"Twenty minutes ago, our cyber-security team detected an unauthorized attempt to access the primary server host for Project Aegis—our federal defense contract," Marcus reported. "The access request used an override key that was issued directly to Julian Miller’s executive account before his termination."
My heart dropped. "Julian saved a backdoor protocol."
"He didn't just save a backdoor," Marcus added, sliding the tablet across the desk. "Our intelligence team intercepting dark-web communications confirmed that Julian has scheduled a meeting tonight at midnight with an international corporate espionage syndicate at a private warehouse near the Brooklyn docks. He's selling Project Aegis."
Arthur’s face turned thunderous. "Selling state defense secrets?! The man isn't just an embezzler... he's a traitor!"
"If that code leaks, Vance Technologies will lose its federal clearance, and the company will be bankrupted by government fines," Marcus warned.
I looked at the tablet, seeing the location pin flashing red near the dark waters of the East River.
"Call the FBI," Arthur ordered sharply.
"Wait, Dad," I interrupted, standing up as a bold, dangerous plan took shape in my mind. "If the FBI raids the warehouse before the exchange happens, Julian’s lawyers will claim he was set up, or that the drive was corrupted. We need to catch him holding the money and delivering the drive."

"Clara, no," Arthur said firmly. "It's too dangerous."
"I spent eight years watching Julian operate, Dad," I said, my eyes flashing with absolute resolve. "He is a coward when he's confronted, but he's sloppy when he thinks he's clever. I'm going with the tactical team."
