Chapter 9 - Healing the Past

That evening, I returned to my new home—a beautiful, sunlit brownstone in Greenwich Village that I had purchased entirely with my own earned income.
The house was quiet, warm, and filled with art, books, and fresh flowers. There were no arrogant husbands shouting orders, no secret mistresses, and no fear.
My best friend from law school, Sarah, was waiting in the kitchen, helping me prepare dinner.
"Can you believe it's been six months since that crazy night at the ballroom?" Sarah asked, pouring two glasses of white wine.
"Sometimes it feels like a lifetime ago," I admitted, setting a plate of fresh salad on the table. "And sometimes it feels like it happened yesterday."
"Are you happy, Clara?" Sarah asked gently, looking into my eyes.
I paused, looking around my beautiful home, then down at my hands. The heavy diamond wedding ring Julian had forced me to wear was long gone, replaced by a simple silver band my mother had given me years ago.
"I am," I answered, a genuine, radiant smile spreading across my face. "For eight years, I thought my worth was tied to making a man feel powerful. I thought being a good wife meant keeping my voice small. I was wrong."
"You're the CEO of a multi-billion-dollar company now," Sarah grinned, raising her glass. "Your voice is loud enough to move markets."

"To new beginnings," I toasted, clinking my glass against hers.
"To new beginnings," Sarah agreed.
