Chapter 2 - The Mask Tears Away

A collective, violent wave of shock ripped through the ballroom.

“Daughter?!” someone in the front row gasped.

“Clara is Arthur Vance’s daughter?!” another executive whispered frantically.

Julian stood frozen on the stage, his mouth hanging open like a landed fish. He looked from Arthur, then down at me, his eyes wide with a terrifying blend of disbelief and rising panic.

"No..." Julian stammered, shaking his head. "No, that's... that's impossible. Clara’s father was a schoolteacher! She grew up in a small town! She... she doesn't have money!"

I took a slow, deliberate step up the carpeted stairs, my heels clicking sharply against the wood. I walked directly past the stunned security guards, stepping onto the main stage until I was standing inches from the man I had spent eight years loving.

"My mother was a schoolteacher, Julian," I said, my voice steady, clear, and utterly devoid of warmth. "She divorced my father when I was five because she hated the corporate world. I chose to take her maiden name when I went to law school because I wanted to build a career on my own merit, not as Arthur Vance’s heiress."

Julian’s chest heaved. Sweat began to glisten across his forehead. "Clara... sweetie, listen to me—"

"When I married you," I continued, interrupting him without mercy, "you were a low-level analyst making sixty thousand dollars a year. I hid my family’s identity because I wanted to know if you loved me, or if you loved my father’s empire."

I leaned in closer, my voice dropping so only he and Arthur could hear.

"For seven years, you were a good husband. But the moment my father gave you a taste of real power three years ago, the monster came out. You started calling me a 'housewife.' You told your friends I was a weight around your neck. You brought that woman into our life because you thought I was too weak to stop you."

"Clara, please!" Julian begged, stepping forward and reaching for my hands. "I was stressed! The promotion... the pressure of the company... I made a terrible mistake tonight! I love you! You know I love you!"

"Don't touch her," Arthur warned, stepping between us like a protective mountain.

Chief Legal Counsel Jonathan Hayes stepped forward, pulling a thick leather binder from his briefcase. He opened it and presented a single, official document to Julian.

"Mr. Miller," Jonathan announced, his professional voice carrying over the silent room. "Pursuant to Section 14 of the Vance Technologies Corporate Charter, any executive appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer must hold at least fifteen percent of voting class shares, or be backed by the explicit guarantee of the Primary Family Trust."

Jonathan turned the page, pointing to the signature line at the bottom.

"The Primary Family Trust is held exclusively by Clara Vance. Five minutes ago, Miss Vance executed her legal right to revoke her guarantee. Your appointment as CEO is null and void. Effective immediately, you are terminated from all operational roles within Vance Technologies."

Julian stumbled back, hitting the edge of the podium. "You... you can't fire me! I built the expansion strategy! The board supports me!"

"The board supports me," Arthur countered coldly. "And right now, the board is watching you get evicted."
