Chapter 3 - The Purge Begins

The party was over.
Within thirty minutes, the grand ballroom was cleared by private security. The music was cut, the champagne towers were dismantled, and the five hundred executives who had just been laughing at my expense hurried out into the rainy night, desperate to distance themselves from the disgraced former CEO.
Inside the executive boardroom on the top floor of the tower, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
I sat at the head of the massive glass table, wrapped in a plush cashmere coat my father’s assistant had brought me. A bag of ice rested against my swollen, bruised left elbow. Beside me sat Arthur, and across from us stood Chief Legal Counsel Jonathan Hayes.
Julian was escorted into the room by two armed guards. He had lost his tuxedo jacket, his collar was unbuttoned, and his hair was wildly disheveled.
"Clara," Julian pleaded, falling into the chair opposite me, his voice cracking with emotion. "Please, just give me five minutes alone with you. We're husband and wife! We built a life together! You can't let your father destroy everything I've worked for over a single night!"
"You destroyed it, Julian," I said, setting the ice pack down. "I didn't shove you onto a marble floor in front of five hundred people. I didn't kiss another woman on national television during your celebration party."
"She meant nothing to me!" Julian cried out, slamming his fists against the glass table. "Sienna was a distraction! I was foolish, I was arrogant, I admit it! But you can't throw away eight years of marriage over a moment of madness!"
"A moment?" I let out a soft, bitter laugh.
I motioned to Jonathan, who slid a thick manila folder across the glass.
"This is a forensic audit of your executive expense account over the past fourteen months, Julian," I explained smoothly. "You spent four hundred thousand dollars of company funds on luxury apartments in Manhattan, private jet charters to Miami, and Cartier jewelry—all billed under 'client entertainment,' but all registered to Sienna's name."
Julian froze, his jaw working silently as he stared at the mountain of bank statements.
"You didn't just betray me emotionally, Julian," I continued, leaning forward. "You committed grand larceny against my father’s company. You thought because you were about to become CEO, no one would ever audit your records."
Arthur slammed his hand onto the table, making the glass ring. "You have one hour to vacate your office, Miller. By midnight, your corporate access cards will be deactivated, your company car will be repossessed, and your personal accounts will be frozen pending a criminal investigation into your embezzlement."
Julian’s eyes filled with wild, desperate rage. He looked at me, his face twisting into a hideous sneer that erased any lingering trace of the man I had once loved.
"You think you're so smart, don't you, Clara?" he spat, his voice dropping into a vicious hiss. "You sat there playing the quiet, dutiful housewife while keeping millions hidden from me! You trapped me! You let me believe I was building a life with an equal, while you held the leash the entire time!"
"I gave you my heart, Julian," I said softly, feeling a quiet, final wave of peace wash over me. "You're the one who decided it was worthless."
I stood up, buttoning my coat.
"Jonathan," I said, looking at our lawyer. "File the divorce papers first thing in the morning. Enforce the prenuptial agreement to its absolute limit."

"Understood, Miss Vance," Jonathan replied.
I turned and walked out of the boardroom, leaving Julian screaming my name as security dragged him down the hall.
