Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the Sovereign

The air in the NICU hallway seemed to drop ten degrees in a single second.

Ryan stared at me, his fingers twitching over the newly signed divorce papers. “Wh-what did you just say? St. Catherine’s belongs to... to who?”

Vanessa let out a nervous, high-pitched laugh, tugging at the lapels of my cashmere coat. “Ryan, don't let her play mind games with you. She’s bluffing. Her parents died when she was twelve! She’s been living off your salary since you got married!”

“I paid for her nursing degree, Vanessa,” Ryan muttered, though his voice lacked its previous confidence. His eyes darted toward the hallway glass, watching the shadow of a tall figure approaching through the restricted doors.

The heavy double doors of the NICU didn't just open—they were held wide by four towering, radio-equipped private security guards wearing dark suits and ear pieces.

Behind them walked my grandfather, Alexander Sterling.

At seventy-eight, Alexander Sterling was the founder and majority shareholder of Sterling Healthcare Group, a global medical conglomerate that owned thirty-four private hospitals across the country, three pharmaceutical research institutions, and the very land beneath St. Catherine Medical Center.

He walked with an ivory-handled cane, dressed in a tailored charcoal wool coat. His silver hair was brushed back, his eyes sharp as polished granite as they swept across the room.

Beside him walked Dr. Robert Chen, the Chief of Medicine at St. Catherine’s, who was practically pale with anxiety, holding a leather tablet against his chest.

“Grandfather,” I murmured, my voice rasping slightly from the lingering fatigue of my emergency surgery.

Alexander didn't look at Ryan. He didn't look at Vanessa. He walked straight to the side of my hospital bed, dropping his heavy cane against the nightstand, and cupped my cheek in his weathered, warm hand.

“My brave girl,” Alexander whispered, his voice thick with rare emotion. “I came as fast as the helicopter could land.”

He turned his head slightly, his gaze landing on the twin incubators behind the glass wall where tiny Ethan and Emma lay fighting for breath.

“How are my great-grandchildren?” Alexander asked Dr. Chen.

“Critical but stable, Mr. Sterling,” Dr. Chen stammered, bowing his head nervously. “Our top neonatal specialists are assigned to them round-the-clock.”

Ryan stood frozen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He recognized Alexander Sterling. Every business executive in the city knew the face of the billionaire mogul whose name was carved into the granite facade of the city’s largest medical research park.

“Mr... Mr. Sterling?” Ryan whispered, his face draining of every drop of color. “You... you’re Evelyn’s grandfather?”

Alexander slowly turned his body around. He stood six-foot-two, his presence completely dwarfing Ryan.

“You must be Ryan Vance,” Alexander said, his voice quiet, steady, and terrifyingly calm. “The young man who took my late daughter’s child into his home, promised to love her, and then waited until she was half-dead in an ICU to steal her money and throw her out.”
