Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation

Ryan took a step toward me, but Marcus immediately placed a heavy hand on his shoulder, keeping him six feet away.
“Evelyn, look at me!” Ryan pleaded, tears welling in his red eyes. “I was out of my mind! Vanessa tricked me! She told me you didn't love me anymore, she threatened to tell my boss about our affair if I didn't leave you—”
“Vanessa didn't force you to walk into a NICU two days after I nearly died, Ryan,” I said coldly, stepping closer to him, my eyes locked onto his trembling face. “Vanessa didn't force you to slap divorce papers onto my blanket while my babies fought for breath behind glass.”
“I was scared!” Ryan cried out, dropping to his knees on the polished marble floor. “I thought the babies weren't going to make it! I thought our life was over!”
“You thought my life was over,” I corrected him fiercely. “You thought I was weak. You thought I had no parents, no influence, and nowhere to go.”
I knelt down slightly, bringing my face level with his.
“Do you remember what you said to me that morning?” I whispered, my voice cutting through him like broken glass. “‘Look at you now. No parents. No career. No future.’”
Ryan bowed his head, weeping openly, his shoulders shaking. “I’m sorry... I’m so sorry, Evelyn... please, don't take my children away from me. Let me be their father.”
“You are not their father, Ryan,” I declared, standing up straight and looking down at him with supreme disdain. “A father protects his children when they are fragile. A father stands by their mother when she bleeds. You are merely a donor whose name will be legally removed from their birth certificates under the fraud statutes.”
Jonathan Sterling-Cross, our lead attorney, stepped out from the adjoining room holding a final set of legal documents.
“Mr. Vance,” Jonathan said smoothly. “These are the finalized custody termination papers. In exchange for Ms. Sterling declining to press individual criminal charges against you for elder financial abuse and medical endangerment, you will surrender all parental rights to Ethan and Emma immediately.”
Ryan looked up at the papers, his face completely hollowed by despair.
“If I don't sign?” Ryan whispered.
“If you don't sign,” Jonathan smiled thinly, “you will be arrested in this room for felony conspiracy, and you will spend the next fifteen years in a state penitentiary alongside your uncle.”

Ryan’s hand shook so violently he could barely hold the pen Jonathan handed him.
He signed every page—not with the smug, arrogant laughter he had displayed three weeks ago, but with heavy, bitter tears of utter defeat.
