Chapter 10 - The Garden of Healing

Two years later.

A warm summer afternoon swept across the gardens of the Sterling Estate.

The air smelled of fresh lavender, blooming roses, and sweet grass.

Three-year-old Ethan and Emma were running across the lush green lawn, their happy, high-pitched laughter ringing through the afternoon air. Ethan was wearing a tiny navy polo shirt, kicking a small soccer ball, while Emma chased after him in a yellow sundress, her bright brown eyes shining with boundless energy.

Beside the stone gazebo, a grey-muzzled Golden Retriever trotted happily alongside them, barking softly whenever the ball rolled into the flowerbeds.

I sat on the gazebo bench, wearing a light linen dress, sipping iced peach tea.

Dr. Julian Vance sat beside me, his arm wrapped gently around my shoulders, his fingers laced warmly through mine.

Over the past two years, Julian’s quiet dedication, profound kindness, and unconditional respect had healed the remaining scars in my heart. He loved Ethan and Emma as if they were his own flesh and blood, attending every soccer practice, every medical checkup, and every bedtime story session.

“Look at them, Evelyn,” Julian murmured softly, kissing my temple. “They’re so fast.”

“They get that from their mother,” Alexander’s voice called out cheerfully.

My grandfather walked down the stone path, holding a wooden toy airplane he had spent the morning carving in his workshop.

Ethan immediately spotted his great-grandfather and came sprinting across the grass. “Grandpa Alex! Look! I kicked the ball all the way to the trees!”

Alexander dropped to one knee—his knees remarkably nimble despite his eighty years—and caught Ethan in a huge, warm hug. “That’s my strong boy!”

Emma ran up behind him, wrapping her small arms around Alexander’s neck from behind, giggling as he spun both of them around on the grass.

I looked at my family—at my thriving, healthy children, my loving partner, and the wise, fierce grandfather who had saved us all.
