Chapter 5 - The Financial Collapse

While my babies slept safely inside their high-tech incubators on the ninth floor, a financial avalanche was descending upon Ryan Vance.

By 8:00 AM the following morning, Alexander’s legal team—led by the formidable corporate attorney Jonathan Sterling-Cross—had filed twenty-four emergency motions in the state supreme court.

Ryan sat in the shabby, fluorescent-lit office of his private bankruptcy attorney, clutching a hot paper cup of cheap coffee.

Across the desk, his attorney looked at a thick stack of legal notices that had been hand-delivered by court couriers twenty minutes earlier.

“Ryan,” the lawyer sighed, rubbing his temples. “Who the hell did you marry?”

“She... she was just a pediatric nurse!” Ryan shouted, his eyes red-rimmed and bloodshot. “She didn't have any money!”

“Her name is Evelyn Sterling!” the lawyer slammed his hand on the desk. “Her grandfather is Alexander Sterling! Do you have any idea what you’ve done?!”

The lawyer pulled three documents from the pile.

“First,” the lawyer read, “Sterling Real Estate Holdings has repossessed the Elm Street condo. Your belongings have been packed into storage boxes and placed on the curb outside the building.”

Ryan gasped. “What about my car?!”

“The lease on your Mercedes was paid through a Sterling corporate account,” the lawyer continued relentlessly. “It was towed from the hospital garage last night. Second, Vance Logistics—the firm where you work as Vice President—is eighty percent owned by a subsidiary of Sterling Healthcare Group.”

Ryan stood up so fast his chair knocked against the wall. “No... no, no! My boss, Mr. Vance, is my uncle!”

“Your uncle was fired by the board of directors at 6:00 AM this morning,” the lawyer revealed flatly. “The board discovered that your uncle used corporate funds to help you hide offshore accounts during your marriage to Evelyn. You have both been terminated for corporate fraud, and the company is filing criminal charges against you.”

Ryan stumbled backward, his knees buckling as he collapsed into his chair.

“And finally,” the lawyer dropped the last document onto the desk, “the divorce papers you forced her to sign in the NICU?”

“She signed them!” Ryan yelled desperately. “She gave up everything!”

“She signed them under physical duress two days after major surgery while attached to medical monitors,” the lawyer scoffed. “The judge threw the agreement out thirty minutes ago. Evelyn’s legal team has filed for full legal and physical custody, maximum child support based on your former income, and a complete forensic audit of every dime you spent on Vanessa over the last two years.”

Before Ryan could speak, his phone rang on the desk.

It was Vanessa.

Ryan answered it instantly, raising the phone to his ear. “Vanessa! Where are you? The lawyers are saying—”

“Ryan, you fraud!” Vanessa’s screech echoed through the speaker so loudly the lawyer could hear it. “Your cards were declined at the hotel! The police are standing outside my apartment because the cashmere coat I took was reported as stolen property worth twelve thousand dollars! Stay away from me!”

The line went dead with a harsh click.

Ryan lowered his phone, staring into the dark screen as his entire world shattered into irrecoverable dust.
