Chapter 8 - The Return Home

Five weeks later.
The autumn sun shone brightly across the sprawling lawns of the Sterling Estate—a magnificent forty-acre property nestled in the rolling hills outside the city.
A private medical transport van pulled up to the grand front entrance.
I stepped out of the vehicle, holding small Ethan wrapped in a soft blue cashmere blanket against my chest.
Beside me, my grandfather walked carefully, carrying little Emma wrapped in a matching pink blanket, his face glowing with a quiet, profound joy that I hadn't seen on his face since my mother passed away twenty years ago.
A team of four private pediatric nurses followed us into the grand foyer, where a magnificent nursery had been constructed on the sunny east wing of the estate.
The nursery featured custom white-oak cribs, hand-painted murals of gentle forest animals, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rose gardens, and state-of-the-art monitoring systems linked directly to St. Catherine Medical Center.
I laid Ethan gently into his crib, pulling the soft blanket up to his shoulders.
Alexander carefully laid Emma into the crib beside her brother. The two tiny infants immediately wriggled closer to each other, their small fingers intertwining in their sleep.
“They’re home, Grandfather,” I whispered softly, resting my hand on his arm.
“They are home, my darling,” Alexander said, his eyes glittering with tears as he looked at his great-grandchildren. “And no one will ever threaten them again.”
My phone chimed softly in my pocket.
It was an update from Jonathan Sterling-Cross.
“Ms. Sterling, Ryan Vance’s bankruptcy filing has been completed. His assets have been fully liquidated to cover court costs and corporate debts. Vanessa has been sentenced to eighteen months of probation and community service for grand larceny. Ryan has taken a job as a night-shift warehouse worker in another state.”

I closed the text message, feeling no anger, no hatred, and no bitterness.
Only peace.
