Chapter 1 - The Secret Beneath the Floorboards

The air in the kitchen turned bitterly cold. The faint scent of stale earth and copper hung thick between us. Daniel stood rooted near the island, his hands clenching into tight fists, eyes fixed on the floor vent where that wheezing voice had just echoed.

“Rachel, take Emma to the car. Now!” Daniel shouted, his voice cracking with sheer panic.

I didn’t ask questions. I grabbed Emma, wrapping her tightly in my arms, and bolted out the back door toward our SUV parked in the driveway. Rain was pouring down in torrents, soaking us within seconds. I slammed Emma into her car seat, strapped her in, and locked the doors from the inside.

Emma was hysterical, clinging to her stuffed unicorn. “Mommy, Daddy is still inside! The wall man is going to hurt him!”

“Stay here, baby. Lock the doors. Mommy is going back for Daddy,” I said, locking the doors with the remote control and racing back toward the house with a heavy metal flashlight I retrieved from the trunk.

Inside, the house felt alive in the worst way possible. Heavy thuds vibrated through the hallway ceiling. I ran into the kitchen and found Daniel prying open a small hidden panel behind the pantry—a panel I had never seen in the four years we lived here.

“Daniel! What are you doing? We need to leave!” I screamed above the sound of scraping inside the walls.

“We can’t just run, Rachel!” Daniel yelled back, pulling out an old iron key tied to a leather thong. “If we leave, whatever is inside will follow us! It’s tied to the bloodline. My great-uncle didn't go missing—he was locked inside by my great-grandfather to hide a dark family curse!”

He explained frantically that his great-grandfather was an eccentric architect in the 1930s who built hidden passages and hollow walls throughout the manor to practice occult rituals, trying to achieve immortality. When his youngest son—Daniel’s great-uncle—died of a sudden illness, the grief-stricken father used an dark ritual to bound the child's spirit and deteriorating body to the inner frame of the house, creating a twisted entity that fed on the life warmth of children.

Suddenly, the kitchen ceiling drywall cracked open. A shower of plaster fell, followed by a long, emaciated, pale limb stretching down from the dark cavity above. The fingers were unnaturally long, tipped with blackened nails.

“Run!” Daniel pulled me back just as the entity dropped onto the kitchen island with a sickening thud.

It was a nightmare made flesh—a creature shrouded in rotting cloth and dust, its eyes glowing with an unnatural hollow light. It didn't possess malice in the traditional sense; it possessed an insatiable, terrifying hunger for warmth—the warmth it had been seeking from Emma every night under her blanket.

We sprinted out to the driveway, threw ourselves into the SUV, and Daniel slammed his foot on the gas. As we sped away from the house, I looked back through the rain-streaked rear window.

Standing in the second-floor window of Emma’s bedroom was a dark silhouette, slowly waving a pale hand against the glass.
