Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Walls

“Get behind me!” Daniel shouted, snatching a heavy wooden chair from the desk.
The drywall cracked. Fine white dust spilled onto the carpet. From the crevice, a soft, pathetic weeping sound echoed—a sound that sounded terrifyingly like a helpless child crying in the dark.
“Mommy... it hurts...” the voice whined from inside the wall. “It’s so cold down here... give me your warmth...”
“Don’t listen to it, Emma!” I covered my daughter’s ears, holding her close to my chest.
I knew we couldn't just keep running from motel to motel. This creature was tracking Emma’s life essence. If we remained passive, it would eventually drag her into the shadows with it.
“Daniel, the journal!” I yelled over the sound of splintering wood. “How do we break the anchor?”
Daniel leafed through the fragile, burnt pages frantically under the dim lamp light. “It says... the anchor is a silver relic locked inside a cast-iron box beneath the central hearth of the original house! To destroy it, the box must be cleansed with fire and salt, and the blood seal must be broken by the current head of the bloodline!”
“That’s you,” I said, looking into my husband's terrified eyes. “You have to destroy it.”
Before Daniel could answer, the wall cracked completely open. Pale, skeletal fingers burst through the drywall, reaching for Emma’s foot hanging off the edge of the bed.

Daniel didn't hesitate. He smashed the heavy chair against the reaching arm with all his strength. A hollow, unnatural screech echoed through the motel room as the arm retracted into the darkness.
“Go to the car!” Daniel roared. “We’re going back to the house tonight! We end this where it started!”
