Chapter 8 - Uncovering the Truth

Daniel collapsed onto the wooden floor, breathing heavily, his hand scorched and bleeding but alive. I ran to him, tearing a strip from my shirt to bind his wounds.
“Is it... over?” Daniel wheezed, looking at the charred contents of the iron box, which had burned down to pure grey ash.
“I think so,” I wept, kissing his forehead.
Outside, the car horn stopped blaring.
I ran out to the driveway and opened the SUV door. Emma was sobbing in her car seat, but when she saw me, she threw her arms around my neck, clinging to me with all her strength.
“Mommy! The cold feeling went away!” she cried. “The man in the wall... he stopped touching my blanket!”
We brought Emma inside, keeping her wrapped in warm blankets in the living room while the police and emergency services—whom I had called during our drive back—arrived at the scene.
When the authorities investigated the house, they brought in structural engineers to inspect the strange cracks in the walls. What they found behind Emma’s headboard shocked everyone.

Deep within the double-framed walls, the authorities discovered an entire hidden room built in the 1930s, complete with a tiny metal bed, dusty toys, and personal items belonging to Daniel’s long-lost great-uncle.
The historical investigation revealed the tragic truth: the child had not been evil; he had been locked away by a paranoid ancestor during an epidemic, forgotten in the secret space when the ancestor died suddenly. His spirit had remained trapped in total isolation and freezing darkness for nearly a century, desperately seeking the human warmth he had been denied in life.
