Chapter 2 - ER Diagnosis and Broken Trust

The pediatric emergency room in downtown Nashville was quiet except for the distant hum of monitors.

Dr. Vance stepped out from behind the curtain after examining Frederick. I held Amy’s hand so tightly my knuckles turned white.

"His fever reached 103.8 degrees," Dr. Vance said, looking at us with serious eyes. "He has an acute ear infection that was left untreated for at least three days. Why didn't you bring him in sooner?"

Amy burst into tears, covering her face. "I tried! I told Teresa three days ago that Frederick was lethargic and hot. But she took my car keys. She said I was being a paranoid, hysterical mother and that I wasn't allowed to leave the house because the caterers were coming."

Dr. Vance’s expression hardened. "She took your keys?"

"She hid them," Amy sobbed, clinging to my arm. "She told me if I made a scene or called Connor while he was on the job site, she would tell everyone I was an unfit mother and call Child Protective Services on me."

I felt an overwhelming surge of guilt hit me like a physical blow.

For four months, while I was out in the field managing fifty-million-dollar commercial construction projects, I had trusted my mother’s daily phone calls. She would call me every afternoon, sweet-talking me, telling me how well Amy was resting and how she was handling all the cooking and chores so Amy could bond with the baby.

I had blindly wired her three thousand dollars every month from my personal account, thinking I was easing my wife’s burden.

Instead, I had paid my mother to turn my own home into a prison.

"He’s going to be okay," Dr. Vance reassured us, his tone softening. "We’ve administered IV antibiotics and fluids. The fever is coming down. But Mr. Bradley, your wife needs medical attention as well. She’s severely dehydrated and showing signs of extreme exhaustion."

I looked at Amy—her pale cheeks, the dark circles under her eyes, her raw, red hands from hours of scrubbing greasy pans.

"I’m so sorry, Amy," I choked out, pulling her into my arms. "I swear to God, I will make this right."
