Chapter 7 - Mason’s Confession

The legal pressure broke the weakest link first.
Late on Friday evening, my doorbell rang. I checked the security camera on my phone.
It was my cousin Mason. He was sweating, looking around nervously, holding a large thick envelope in his shaking hands.
I opened the door, but kept the heavy security screen locked. "You have thirty seconds before I call the police, Mason."
"Connor, please!" Mason wept, dropping to his knees on the porch. "Don't ruin my life! I’ll tell you everything! I’ll testify against Aunt Teresa! Just drop the lawsuit against me!"
I looked down at him through the iron screen. "Talk."
Mason frantically opened the envelope, shoving documents through the mail slot. "It was all Teresa’s idea! She approached me six months ago. She said you were making too much money and that Amy didn't deserve any of it because she didn't come from a wealthy family!"
He wiped his nose with his sleeve, sobbing uncontrollably. "Teresa told me if I helped her forge the notary stamps and process the loan documents through my buddy’s lending firm, she would give me fifty thousand dollars to pay off my gambling debts! She promised me you would never find out because you were always busy working!"
"What about the party?" I asked coldly. "Why did she invite everyone?"
"It was a victory celebration," Mason confessed. "The loan was supposed to clear on Monday. She invited the whole family to show off that she was taking over the house. She wanted to force Amy to break down and leave you so Teresa could move in permanently!"
I recorded every single word on my phone's audio app.

"You're going to give a formal written statement to Prosecutor Katherine Vance tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM," I told him. "If you miss it by one minute, I will make sure you spend the next ten years in state prison alongside your aunt."
"I’ll be there! I swear I’ll be there!" Mason cried, nodding hysterically before turning and running down the driveway.
