Chapter 3 - Cleaning Out the Nest

By 8:00 AM the next morning, Frederick’s fever had broken, and Amy was finally resting in a hospital room with IV fluids.
I left them under the care of my trusted friend, Dr. Sarah Jenkins, and drove back to my house.
The driveway was still littered with empty plastic cups, beer bottles, and paper plates from my mother's ruined party. The front door was unlocked.
I walked inside. The smell of stale seafood, cheap wine, and heavy perfume made my stomach turn.
Sitting in my living room, casually drinking my expensive coffee, was my Aunt Betsy and her husband, Uncle Richard. They had brought their luggage and were sitting on my leather sofa as if they owned the place.
"Oh, Connor," Betsy said, setting her cup down without a shred of shame. "You really caused a scene last night. Your poor mother spent the night in a jail cell! You need to go down there right now and drop the charges."
I stood in the entryway, my hands clenched into fists. "Get out."
Richard scoffed, leaning back. "Now listen here, nephew. Teresa made a mistake getting rowdy with the police, but she was doing all this for the family name. Your wife is weak, Connor. She can't handle running a household like this. Teresa was just stepping up—"
"I said get out," I roared, my voice shaking the drywall.
I walked over to the front door, threw it wide open, and pointed outside. "You have five minutes to take your bags and leave my property. If you are still on my lawn when the timer hits five minutes, I will have you arrested for criminal trespassing and complicity in fraud."
Betsy gasped. "We are your family!"
"My family is in the hospital because of you!" I yelled back. "Every single relative who sat at my table yesterday while my wife was forced to serve them on a plastic stool is dead to me. Move!"
Seeing the lethal fury in my eyes, Richard grabbed Betsy’s arm and scrambled to gather their bags. Within three minutes, they rushed out the door, cursing my name as they went.

I didn't waste a second. I called a locksmith, my security company, and a private investigative team specializing in forensic accounting.
The battle for my family had just begun.
