Chapter 3 - The Price of Treason

The boardroom dissolved into absolute chaos.
Mr. Vance stood up, his voice thunderous. “Evelyn! What is the meaning of this? You told the board that the Vance-Sterling debt had been restructured with a ten-year grace period!”
“It was!” Evelyn stuttered, her usual cold authority entirely shattered. She pointed a shaking finger at me. “She’s lying! She’s a nobody! Her family was broke when her grandmother died!”
Arthur Hale stepped forward, dropping a thick blue folder onto the center of the glass table.
“This is the original debt purchase agreement executed six years ago,” Arthur explained calmly to the board. “Claire’s grandmother purchased 60% of Mercer Logistics’ defaulting bonds. Upon her passing, full title was transferred to Claire. Under Clause 14-B of the agreement, if the managing officers of Mercer Logistics engage in bad-faith criminal conduct or moral turpitude impacting the principal, the full balance of twelve million dollars becomes due within twenty-four hours.”
“Twelve million?” Daniel choked out, sinking back into his chair as if he had been punched in the chest. “We... we don't have twelve million in liquid capital!”
“I know,” I said, locking eyes with him. “You spent your liquid capital buying a yacht last month that you registered in your mother’s name. You spent it on high-end dinners, luxury cars, and vanity investments, all while pretending you were building an empire.”
Evelyn lunged toward me, her face contorted in rage. “You treacherous little leech! You married my son just to take our company!”
Before she could reach me, the two process servers stepped between us.
“Mrs. Mercer, step back,” one of them warned sternly. “You are currently being served with a temporary restraining order. If you come within fifty feet of Mrs. Claire Mercer, you will be arrested on the spot for violation of a court protection order based on physical assault.”
Evelyn froze, her chest heaving, her eyes wild with a mixture of hatred and terror.
I picked up my briefcase from the table. “Daniel, your belongings are packed and sitting outside the gate of my house. The digital locks have been changed. If you set foot on the property, you will be trespassing.”
Daniel scrambled to his feet, tears of desperation finally welling in his eyes. “Claire, please! We’re married! We can talk about this! I didn't know about the debt... I didn't know my mother did those things with the finances!”
“You knew she hit me,” I said softly, every word laced with poison. “You stood there and watched. That was your choice, Daniel. Now live with the consequences.”
I turned on my heel and walked out of the boardroom. Behind me, I could hear the board members shouting at Evelyn, demanding answers, while Daniel screamed my name down the corridor.
I didn't look back.
When I reached the lobby, I stepped out into the bright morning sunlight. Arthur caught up with me, his expression grim but satisfied.
“The freezing orders on their personal accounts will take effect by noon,” Arthur reported. “Evelyn won't be able to move a single dollar out of the country. But Claire... you need to be careful. People like Evelyn Mercer don't go down quietly. She will look for a way to strike back.”
“I’m counting on it,” I said, opening my car door. “She thinks her only problem is the money. She still doesn't know about the shell companies.”

“You mean the offshore accounts she used to siphon money out of the port workers’ pension fund?” Arthur asked softly.
“Exactly,” I replied, staring out at the city skyline. “Evelyn thought she was a predator. I’m going to show her what happens when the prey turns into the hunter.”
