Chapter 5 - The Shadow Player

Two days later, Evelyn held a press conference outside the city courthouse.

She stood before a bank of microphones, wearing an impeccably tailored black suit, her hair styled to perfection, looking every bit the grieving, victimized matriarch. Daniel stood behind her, looking pale and hollowed-out, like a ghost forced to walk in the daylight.

I watched the live broadcast from my office.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Evelyn said, her voice dripping with calculated sadness. “In recent days, my family and our company, Mercer Logistics, have fallen victim to a malicious, premeditated smear campaign executed by my son’s estranged wife, Claire.”

She dabbed at her eyes with a delicate white handkerchief.

“Claire entered our family under false pretenses. She manipulated legal loopholes left by her late grandmother to launch a hostile takeover against the very company that welcomed her with open arms. The absurd allegations of physical altercations are completely fabricated—a desperate attempt by an unstable individual to ruin my family’s reputation.”

She paused, taking a deep breath before delivering her trump card.

“However, Mercer Logistics remains unshakable. Today, I am proud to announce a strategic partnership with Vance Capital, led by Mr. Julian Vance. With an immediate cash injection of fifteen million dollars, we will fully settle all claims and ensure our family business remains where it belongs.”

The reporters started shouting questions all at once, but Evelyn simply smiled, turned on her heel, and walked into the courthouse flanked by Julian Vance himself.

Julian looked straight into the camera, a smirk playing on his sharp features. It was a clear message to me: You lost.

My phone buzzed. It was Arthur.

“Did you see it?” he asked.

“I saw it,” I said calmly.

“Julian’s loan cleared this morning. They are filing the debt redemption paperwork right now. By four o’clock today, your debt instruments against Mercer Logistics will be paid off in full, and your legal claim to accelerate bankruptcy will be voided.”

“They think they’ve won,” I said softly.

“Haven't they?” Arthur sounded genuinely concerned. “With Julian’s capital, they can pay off Vance-Sterling and drag the divorce out for years in court.”

“Arthur,” I said, leaning back in my leather chair. “Where did Julian Vance get fifteen million dollars in liquid cash on forty-eight hours' notice?”

A short pause on the line. “He pulled it from his primary investment fund, Vance European Holdings.”

“And who is the majority shareholder of Vance European Holdings?” I asked, a slow, predatory smile spreading across my face.

There was complete silence on the line as Arthur realized what I was hinting at. I heard the sound of papers shuffling rapidly on his desk.

“No...” Arthur gasped softly. “You... you couldn't have...”

“My grandmother didn't just buy Mercer debt, Arthur,” I said softly. “When Julian Vance expanded his firm four years ago, he took a massive capital influx from a private Swiss trust. That trust was registered under the name Lillian’s Legacy—my grandmother’s estate.”

“Julian just used your own money to pay off your debt!” Arthur almost laughed out loud.

“Exactly,” I said. “Julian breached his fund’s fiduciary duty by executing an unauthorized high-risk loan without the Swiss trust’s approval. He just handed me the keys to his entire financial empire.”
