Chapter 8 - Unraveling the Web

Over the next three weeks, the unraveling of the Mercer family empire was swift, brutal, and public.

With Evelyn and Daniel held in federal custody without bail due to flight risks associated with their offshore accounts, the truth about Mercer Logistics finally came to light. The company had been operating as a glorified Ponzi scheme for nearly five years, using new investor money and stolen pension funds to pay off old debts while funding Evelyn’s lavish lifestyle.

Because I was the primary legitimate debt holder and the representative of the estate that owned the land, the federal bankruptcy court appointed me as the interim receiver for Mercer Logistics.

I walked into the executive suite of Mercer Logistics on a rainy Monday morning—not as an unwanted daughter-in-law, but as the sole owner and restructuring authority.

I spent the first few days firing the corrupt executives Evelyn had installed to cover her tracks. I met with the port workers, whose pension fund had been depleted by Evelyn’s greed, and announced that my grandmother’s foundation would fully restore their retirement accounts out of the estate’s personal reserves.

The workers wept with gratitude. The union pledged their full support to the new management.

One afternoon, Arthur brought me a visitor’s request from the county jail.

Daniel wanted to see me.

I thought about it for a long moment, then nodded. “Set it up. I’ll go tomorrow.”
