Chapter 7 - The Collapse

Evelyn’s champagne glass slipped from her hand, crashing against the polished marble floor and shattering into a hundred glittering shards.
“What... what is this?” she shrieked, stumbling back. “This is a mistake! Do you know who I am?”
“We know exactly who you are, Mrs. Mercer,” the lead agent said coldly, snapping a pair of steel handcuffs around her wrists. “We’ve been monitoring your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands for six months, thanks to financial records provided by the principal trustee of the Lillian Vance Estate.”
Evelyn whipped her head around toward me, her eyes bloodshot with raw, unspeakable hatred. “YOU! YOU DID THIS!”
“You did this to yourself, Evelyn,” I said softly as the agents secured her hands behind her back. “When you dragged me by my hair, you told me I married beneath me. But the truth is, your entire family was living off stolen wealth and my grandmother’s mercy. The mercy is gone.”
Daniel panicked. He turned to run toward the side exit, but two federal agents grabbed his arms, slamming him against a nearby marble pillar and forcing his hands behind his back.
“Claire! Help me! Please!” Daniel screamed, crying openly as the handcuffs clicked into place. “I didn't know! Mom handled the taxes! I was just signing what she gave me!”
“Ignorance is not a defense for fraud, Daniel,” I said, looking down at him without a shred of pity. “You stood by and let her abuse me. You thought I was weak. You were wrong.”
Julian Vance was backing away from the scene, his face completely pale. “Wait... if Mercer Logistics is seized by the federal government... my fifteen million dollars...”
Arthur Hale stepped out from the crowd, holding a legal brief.
“Your fifteen million dollars has been frozen as proceeds of a crime, Mr. Vance,” Arthur said cleanly. “And because you violated your fiduciary duty, the Lillian Estate has triggered an immediate board takeover of Vance Capital. As of ten minutes ago, you have been removed as Managing Director.”
Julian looked like he was going to throw up. He sank against a nearby table, his empire crumbling around him in a matter of seconds.
The agents led Evelyn and Daniel out of the ballroom in full view of the city’s highest society. Evelyn screamed curses at me all the way down the grand hall, her voice echoing off the high ceilings until the heavy glass doors closed behind them.
The ballroom was dead silent. Every eye in the room was fixed on me.

I turned calmly to the remaining guests, raised my glass of water, and smiled.
“Enjoy the evening, everyone.”
