Chapter 6 - Checkmate at the Gala

The Annual Maritime Commerce Gala was the grandest event of the year for the city’s elite. It was held in the grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel, a glittering spectacle of crystal chandeliers, champagne fountains, and high-society posturing.

Evelyn Mercer had spent years using this event to cement her social standing. Tonight, she intended to use it as her victory lap.

I arrived at 8:30 PM.

I wore an emerald green silk gown that flowed down to the floor, my hair styled in an elegant updo, exposing my neck and shoulders without a single trace of weakness. I walked into the ballroom alone, holding my head high.

The room went quiet as people noticed me. Whispers rippled through the crowd.

Across the ballroom, Evelyn was holding a glass of vintage champagne, surrounded by a group of wealthy investors and city officials. Daniel stood beside her, looking uncomfortable in his tuxedo. Beside them was Julian Vance, looking like the cat that had swallowed the canary.

When Evelyn saw me, her eyes burned with toxic pleasure. She whispered something to Julian, and the three of them began walking directly toward me.

The crowd parted, eager to witness the collision.

“Claire,” Evelyn said, her voice ringing out loudly enough for nearby guests to hear. “I’m surprised you had the audacity to show up tonight. Aren't you embarrassed?”

“Why would I be embarrassed, Evelyn?” I asked smoothly, taking a glass of sparkling water from a passing waiter’s tray.

“Because your little scheme failed,” Julian Vance stepped forward, smirking arrogance radiating from him. “The debt was paid in full three hours ago, Claire. Mercer Logistics is completely debt-free from Vance-Sterling. You have no leverage left. You’re just an unemployed designer with a bitter heart.”

Daniel looked at me, a mixture of guilt and smugness in his eyes. “You should have accepted the agreement, Claire. We offered you a way out. Now you get nothing.”

I looked at all three of them—Evelyn, proud and spiteful; Daniel, weak and reliant on his mother’s apron strings; and Julian, foolishly arrogant.

“Julian,” I said softly, my voice calm and conversational. “Did you read the terms of the investment covenant for Vance European Holdings before you transferred that fifteen million dollars this morning?”

Julian’s smirk wavered slightly. “What are you talking about?”

“Clause 9 of the Swiss Trust agreement,” I continued, taking a slow sip of my water. “It explicitly prohibits Vance Capital from investing trust capital into distressed assets managed by individuals currently under federal criminal investigation.”

Julian’s face went rigid. “Mercer Logistics isn't under federal criminal investigation!”

“It wasn't this morning,” I replied.

I signaled toward the entrance of the ballroom.

The heavy double doors opened, and four agents in dark suits from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division walked into the hall, led by a Senior Assistant United States Attorney.

The ballroom fell into a stunned silence.

The lead agent walked straight up to Evelyn Mercer and pulled out a badge and a warrant.

“Evelyn Mercer, Daniel Mercer,” the agent announced firmly. “You are under arrest for federal tax fraud, wire fraud, and the illegal diversion of port employee pension funds into offshore shell accounts.”
