Chapter 13 - The Echo of the Fallen

The reception hall of the Drake Hotel was filled with soft candlelight, smooth jazz, and the gentle clinking of champagne flutes.

The Vance Global Philanthropic Foundation was hosting its quarterly fundraising gala, bringing together Chicago’s top legal minds, medical leaders, and philanthropists to raise funds for the expansion of the center’s emergency housing wing.

Audrey moved through the room with effortless grace, wearing a midnight-blue velvet gown with a delicate silver brooch at the shoulder. Beside her, Alexander looked remarkably handsome in a dark tuxedo, his hand gently resting at the small of her back as they greeted donors.

"The gala raised two point four million dollars in the first hour," Sophia whispered, sliding up beside them with a glass of sparkling water. "The press is calling this the most successful philanthropic launch in the Midwest."

"It’s not about the money, Sophia," Audrey smiled gently. "It’s about the seventy beds we can open next month."

"Speaking of uninvited guests," Sophia muttered, her smile instantly fading as her eyes flicked toward the grand entrance of the ballroom.

Audrey turned her head.

Standing near the coat check, looking frayed, disheveled, and completely out of place among the elite crowd, was Dominic Vance.

He wore a worn, faded suit that looked three sizes too big for his gaunt frame. His hair was unkempt, his eyes bloodshot, and his hands trembled as he argued with two private security guards who were blocking his path.

"I just need five minutes with her!" Dominic’s voice rose, desperate and cracking. "She’s my wife! Audrey! Audrey, please!"

The ballroom fell into a tense, uncomfortable hush. Guests began to turn, whispering among themselves as they recognized the man who had once been the golden heir of the Vance empire.

Alexander immediately stepped in front of Audrey, his tall frame forming an protective barrier, but Audrey gently touched his forearm.

"It’s alright, Alexander," Audrey said calmly. "I’ll handle this."

She walked toward the entrance, her head held high, her posture regal. Alexander and two security officers walked closely behind her.

Dominic’s eyes lit up with a pathetic, desperate hope as Audrey stopped ten feet away from him.

"Audrey..." Dominic breathed, taking a step forward before the guards blocked him. "Look at you... you look incredible. Audrey, please, you have to talk to me. The road crew job... it’s killing me. My mother is losing her mind in prison, and Paige won't even answer my calls. I have nothing left!"

Audrey looked at him. Five years ago, the sight of Dominic’s anger or tears would have made her heart race with fear or guilt. Now, looking at him, she felt nothing—no anger, no bitterness, only a profound, quiet pity for a man who had chosen to be a coward.

"You shouldn't be here, Dominic," Audrey said, her voice flat and cool like morning ice.

"I made a mistake!" Dominic sobbed, tears spilling over his hollow cheeks as guests watched from afar. "My mother forced me into everything! The staircase... the signatures... I was terrified of her, Audrey! You know how she was! I still love you... I've always loved you!"

"Love?" Alexander stepped forward, his tone cold and sharp as steel. "You stood by while your mother systematically destroyed her life. You let her bleed on a marble floor while you worried about your inheritance. Do not dare speak to her about love."

Dominic glared at Alexander with bitter envy. "You took everything from me, Reed! You stole my wife! You stole my life!"

"You gave your life away, Dominic," Audrey cut in, every word crystal clear. "You traded your integrity, your marriage, and your humanity for your mother's approval and Paige's lies. You destroyed yourself."

Dominic reached into his pocket, pulling out a faded, crumpled photograph—their wedding photo from six years ago. "Look at this, Audrey! Remember who we were! Give me a chance to fix it... just a small loan, or a position at your foundation—"

"The foundation is for victims of abuse, Dominic," Audrey said, her gaze unyielding. "Not for the perpetrators who refused to take responsibility."

She turned to the security guards. "Escort Mr. Vance off the premises. If he returns, file a formal trespass order."

"Audrey! No! Audrey!" Dominic screamed as the guards firmly led him out through the brass revolving doors into the cold rain outside.

Audrey took a deep breath, smoothing the front of her gown. She turned to Alexander, who was looking at her with deep pride and tenderness.

"Are you okay?" Alexander asked softly, taking her hand.

Audrey looked out at the warm, glowing ballroom filled with people who believed in her vision. She smiled—a genuine, radiant expression.

"I’ve never been better," Audrey said, squeezing his hand. "Let's go back to our guests."
