Chapter 19 - The Saboteur’s Fall
While Audrey and Alexander were celebrating their engagement, Paige was growing increasingly desperate.
Living in a cramped, drafty room above a budget motel by the highway, working grueling twelve-hour night shifts at the front desk, her former life of luxury was a distant, painful memory.
Driven by bitter envy and fueled by alcohol, Paige decided to launch one final, cowardly attack against Audrey.
Using an anonymous social media account, Paige uploaded a series of doctored audio clips and fabricated blog posts claiming that Audrey had used foundation funds to pay off judges during the Apex trial, alleging that the Marcus & Child Center was a fraudulent tax shelter.
The post began to gain traction on fringe news blogs overnight.
However, Paige forgot one crucial detail: Sophia Vance was now the most feared media litigator in the state.
At 9:00 AM the following morning, while Paige was sleeping in her motel room, her door was knocked on loudly by two officers from the Cyber Crime Unit of the Illinois State Police.
Paige opened the door, bleary-eyed and wrapped in a stained robe. "What... what is this?"
"Paige Miller?" the lead detective asked sternly. "You are under arrest for criminal defamation, cyber-harassment, and violation of your previous civil settlement agreement."
Sophia stepped out from behind the officers, wearing a sharp grey suit, holding a printed IP address tracking report.
"Did you really think we wouldn't track the IP address back to your motel Wi-Fi within twenty minutes, Paige?" Sophia asked, her voice laced with cool contempt.
Paige’s face went completely pale. "Sophia! Please! It was a mistake! I was drunk! I have no money left!"
"You had a second chance to rebuild your life quietly, Paige," Sophia said coldly. "Instead, you chose to continue attacking a woman who never did you any harm. The foundation has filed a criminal complaint, and this time, there will be no out-of-court settlement."
As the officers handcuffed Paige and led her out to the squad car, guests from the motel watched and filmed the scene on their phones.
