Chapter 3 - The Freezing of the Empire

Dominic dragged himself up from the floor, wiping his bloodshot eyes as he shuffled down the grand staircase, Victoria and Paige trailing behind him in nervous silence.
Standing in the entryway, illuminated by the cold blue lights of two black police sedans parked outside the glass doors, were two uniformed officers alongside a tall, sharp-featured woman in a tailored dark grey suit.
Sophia Sterling. My lead attorney.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Victoria bellowed, attempting to reclaim her imperious posture as she reached the bottom landing. "Do you know whose house this is? This is private property! Officers, arrest these people for trespassing!"
Sophia didn't even blink. She held a thick, leather-bound portfolio in one hand and a stack of court-stamped documents in the other.
"Mrs. Victoria Sterling, Mr. Dominic Sterling," Sophia said calmly, her voice carrying the smooth, razor-sharp edge of a litigator who had never lost a case. "I am here on behalf of my client, Audrey Sterling. I am serving you with an emergency temporary restraining order, a petition for absolute divorce on the grounds of severe spousal cruelty, and a formal notification of asset seizure."
Dominic froze on the last step. "Asset seizure? What are you talking about? Audrey doesn't own anything! She came into this marriage with nothing but a beat-up suitcase!"
Sophia allowed herself a small, ice-cold smile. She stepped forward, slipping a copy of the official court order into Dominic's limp hand.
"Audrey didn't come into this marriage with nothing, Mr. Sterling. She came into this marriage with grace," Sophia said, her eyes flashing with disdain. "Three years ago, when your family’s construction business was eighty-eight hours away from involuntary bankruptcy, an offshore venture firm named Aegis Holdings injected fourteen million dollars in equity to clear your debts and secure your lines of credit."
Dominic’s breathing hitched. "Aegis Holdings... that’s our primary institutional partner. They own sixty-two percent of our voting shares."
"Correction," Sophia replied softly. "Audrey owns sixty-two percent of your voting shares. Aegis Holdings is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Vance Trust—a private estate established by Audrey's late father, Marcus Vance. Audrey is the sole trustee and beneficiary."
The entryway fell into a suffocating, absolute silence.
Victoria leaned against the mahogany banister, her hand clutching her chest as if she had suddenly been struck by lightning. "Marcus Vance? The steel tycoon? No... no, that’s absurd! She was working as a junior librarian when Dominic met her! She wore rags!"
"She wore humble clothes because she wanted to be loved for who she was, not for her eighty-million-dollar trust," Sophia hissed, leaning in closer to Victoria. "A concept a woman like you could never comprehend."
Dominic stared at the paper in his hands. His eyes scanned the legal jargon, reading the terrifying reality in bold black ink:
...Effective immediately, all accounts, lines of credit, and assets tied to Aegis Holdings, including the real property located at 1404 Crestview Estate, the commercial leases held by Sterling Construction, and the corporate vehicles assigned to Dominic Sterling, are subject to an immediate administrative freeze pending emergency litigation...
"This house..." Dominic whispered, his voice shaking. "I bought this house..."
"You leased this house through a shell company fully funded by Aegis Holdings," Sophia interrupted coldly. "In exactly twelve hours, the corporate security team will arrive to change the digital locks, clear the premises, and repossess the luxury vehicles parked in your driveway. You have until 8:00 a.m. to pack your personal effects. Anything purchased with corporate funds stays."
"You can't do this!" Victoria shrieked, lunging forward, but one of the uniformed officers stepped into her path, his hand resting casually on his belt. "This is our home! We built this family!"
"You built a house of cards on top of a woman’s kindness," Sophia said, turning her back on them. She stopped at the front door and looked back over her shoulder at Dominic, who was standing like a corpse under the crystal chandelier. "Oh, and Mr. Sterling? Audrey left a message regarding your corporate credit cards."

Dominic looked up with hollow, dead eyes.
"They were canceled twenty minutes ago," Sophia said smoothly. "Have a wonderful night."
