Chapter 10 - The Family We Choose

Three months later, on a perfect late-summer evening, the grounds of the Newport estate were illuminated by thousands of soft, twinkling fairy lights strung through the oak trees.
It was not a corporate gala or a high-society event. There were no reporters, no stock tickers, and no business executives trying to negotiate debt acquisitions.
It was a wedding.
A long wooden table stood on the lawn near the edge of the cliff, covered in white roses, candles, and fine crystal. Around it sat twenty people—the small, devoted circle of friends, security staff, nurses, and legal team members who had become true family over the hardest year of their lives.
At the head of the cliffside altar, framed by the deep blue twilight sky and the sound of crashing ocean waves, stood Julian Vance. He wore an impeccably tailored black tuxedo, his eyes fixed entirely on the stone path leading down from the house.
The soft string quartet began playing a quiet, uplifting melody.
Eleanor stepped onto the path, taking her first steps toward him.
She wore a breathtaking lace gown that draped gracefully around her, her dark hair styled in soft waves adorned with small white flowers. She walked down the aisle alone, holding her head high, proud, radiant, and entirely free. She needed no father to give her away. She was her own woman, stepping willingly into the future she had chosen for herself.
When she reached the altar, Julian stepped forward, taking both of her hands in his. His grip was warm, solid, and unwavering.
"You take my breath away, Ellie," he whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion.
The officiant, a long-time family judge who had presided over the legal dissolution of Arthur’s empire, stepped forward with a smile.
"We are gathered here tonight not just to celebrate a marriage," the judge began, "but to witness the triumph of love over adversity, of truth over deceit, and of family over ambition."
When it came time for the vows, Julian pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket, but he didn't look down at it. He looked directly into Eleanor’s eyes.
"Eleanor," Julian said, his voice ringing strong and clear through the calm night air. "A year ago, I believed that the world was built entirely on power, strategy, and leverage. I thought that to protect myself, I had to be colder and more ruthless than the men who tried to break me. But then you walked into my life. You showed me that real power isn't in destroying empires—it's in building a home. You gave me a son. You brought my mother back from the dark. You gave me my soul back. I promise to honor you, protect you, and love you through every storm that comes our way."
Tears glistened in Eleanor’s eyes as she smiled, her hands trembling slightly in his.
"Julian," she said softly. "When my parents walked into that hospital room, they thought I was helpless. They thought I was alone. But I wasn't alone, because I had your love inside my heart. You showed up at the end of that hallway not just as a protector, but as the man who saw my true worth when everyone else treated me like a bargaining chip. You showed me what a real father looks like, what a real husband looks like, and what real love feels like. I give you my heart, my life, and my future, today and forever."
"By the authority vested in me," the judge announced with a wide smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Julian, you may kiss your bride."
Julian didn't hesitate. He pulled Eleanor into his arms, dipping her slightly as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, passionate, definitive kiss that sealed their lives together forever.
The small crowd erupted into cheers and applause. Marcus wiped a tear from his eye, while Catherine held Jude up, letting the infant clap his tiny hands as his mother and father embraced.
Later that night, as the guests danced under the canopy of stars, Eleanor and Julian walked away from the music, stepping up to the edge of the granite cliff that overlooked the ocean.
Julian wrapped his arms around her from behind, pulling her back against his chest as the cool night breeze fluttered her veil. Down on the lawn, Catherine was softly rocking Jude to sleep near the fire pit.
"Happy, Mrs. Vance?" Julian whispered into her hair, pressing a gentle kiss against her temple.

Eleanor looked down at the gold band shining on her ring finger, then out at the dark, vast ocean stretching out toward the horizon—endless, beautiful, and filled with infinite possibilities.
"I’m more than happy, Julian," Eleanor replied, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck, looking up at the man who had brought down an empire just to give her a home. "I’m finally free."
