Chapter 2 - The Sanctum

Twenty-four hours later, a sleek fleet of dark armored SUVs pulled through the grand iron gates of the Vance Estate in Newport, Rhode Island. Snow was falling in heavy, silent flakes, coating the slate roofs and stone turrets of the sprawling oceanfront compound in a blanket of pristine white.
Inside the rear master suite of the main residence, a roaring fire crackled in the floor-to-ceiling granite fireplace. The room smelled of cedar, fresh linen, and the subtle scent of lavender oil.
Eleanor sat in a plush velvet armchair near the fire, cradling Jude as a private nurse adjusted the infant’s bassinet nearby. For the first time in nine months, she felt the oppressive weight of fear lift from her chest—yet a lingering anxiety remained.
Julian walked into the room, having stripped down to a simple charcoal sweater and rolled-up sleeves. He carried two mugs of hot tea, setting one on the side table next to her before pulling up a matching ottoman to sit directly across from her.
"The security perimeter is locked down," Julian said softly. "Three private guards at the front gate, motion sensors across the cliffside, and a private medical team on standby downstairs. Nobody comes within a mile of this house without my personal authorization."
"It feels like a fortress," Eleanor whispered, taking a sip of the warm chamomile tea. "Or a gilded cage."
Julian paused, his gray eyes searching hers with profound tenderness. "Do you feel caged, Ellie?"
"No," she said quickly, reaching out to touch his wrist. "No, Julian. For nine months, I lived in that tiny cabin in Maine, checking my rearview mirror every time I drove to the grocery store, terrified my father’s investigators would find me and force me into an abortion or an adoption agreement. This... this feels like peace. But I know what's coming outside these walls."
Julian leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Your father filed an emergency motion in Providence Superior Court two hours ago. He’s claiming undue influence. He’s telling the court that I forced you to keep the baby to orchestrate a hostile takeover of Dawson Global."
Eleanor let out a bitter, disbelieving laugh. "He really believes his own lies, doesn't he? He can't accept that I left because I hated what they stood for. He can't accept that I love you."
"The court will throw it out by Friday," Julian said coolly. "My legal team filed our countersuit an hour ago. We’ve submitted six months of documented evidence showing Howard's systematic embezzlement of company funds, along with the recorded audio of your mother threatening to ruin you financially unless you surrendered your trust."
Eleanor’s eyes widened. "You recorded them in the hospital?"
"Marcus wore a wire," Julian confessed without a shred of guilt. "I knew what they were capable of, Ellie. I wasn't going to leave anything to chance. In court, that audio will destroy any moral high ground they attempt to claim. But there’s another problem."
"Arthur," Eleanor stated flatly.
Julian nodded slowly. "My father called my personal line thirty minutes ago. He bought forty percent of Dawson Global's distressed bonds from an offshore hedge fund this afternoon. He now controls enough leverage to block our restructuring plan unless I agree to give Vance Holdings a seat on the board of our new logistics subsidiary."
"He’s trying to force a partnership," Eleanor said, her mind racing. "If he gets a seat on the board, he’ll have access to our internal supply chains. He could sabotage the launch of the new green-energy fleet you’ve been building for three years."
"Precisely," Julian said. "He wants to prove that I still need his capital to close a deal. He wants to humble me."
Jude let out a tiny cry in Eleanor’s arms, squirming against his swaddling. Julian immediately reached out, expertly lifting his son against his chest and burping him with practiced, gentle pats on his tiny back. The sight of this ruthless financial titan tenderly cradling an infant was a sight Eleanor knew she would never tire of seeing.

"So what do we do?" Eleanor asked, watching her fiancé rock their child.
Julian’s eyes darkened with a cold, strategic brilliant fire. "We don't fight him in the courtroom, Ellie. We fight him in the boardrooms of Wall Street. Arthur built his wealth on high-yield debt. Tomorrow morning, I’m launching a short-squeeze on his flagship fund. By the time he realizes what’s happening, he’ll be too busy saving his own bank to care about Dawson Global."
