Chapter 6 - The Shadow of the Past

Three weeks after the court hearing, winter had deepened, throwing heavy blizzards across the New England coastline. The corporate surrender of Dawson Global was complete. The company was officially dissolved, its valuable shipping contracts and green-energy infrastructure absorbed into Vance Logistics—a brand-new subsidiary with Eleanor Dawson named as the unanimous Chairwoman of the Board.
Despite the triumph, a strange, lingering shadow hung over the Newport estate.
Julian had spent late nights in his private office, surrounded by stacks of financial audits dating back twenty years. Eleanor noticed the growing dark circles under his eyes and the subtle tension in his jaw every time his private phone rang.
One evening, after feeding Jude and putting him down in his crib, Eleanor walked down the grand spiral staircase to Julian’s study. The room was dark, lit only by the amber glow of the fireplace and the pale light of two computer monitors.
Julian was staring at an old, yellowed photograph held in his hand.
Eleanor stepped softy across the hardwood floor and wrapped her arms around his shoulders from behind, leaning her chin on his neck. "What are you looking at, my love?"
Julian sighed, placing the photograph on the desk. It was an old picture of a young boy sitting on a sailboat with a smiling, dark-haired woman.
"It’s my mother," Julian murmured. "She took this photo the summer before she died. I was seven."
Eleanor looked closer at the desk. Scattered around the photograph were legal documents bearing the corporate seal of Arthur Vance’s primary offshore holding company.
"What did you find in the Dawson Global audits, Julian?" Eleanor asked gently.
Julian turned his swivel chair around, pulling Eleanor onto his lap and holding her close. "My father didn't just try to buy Dawson Global to get to me, Ellie. He’s been using your father’s company for fifteen years to cover up something much worse."
Eleanor froze. "What do you mean?"
"When my mother died thirty years ago, Arthur claimed she died of an accidental illness while vacationing in Europe," Julian said, his voice dropping to a strained whisper. "I was too young to question it. But while digging through Howard’s secret offshore ledgers—the ones he used for embezzlement—we found wire transfers linked directly to a private clinic in Switzerland. Howard was paying the clinic’s maintenance fees on behalf of Arthur."
Eleanor’s breath caught in her throat. "Your mother didn't die thirty years ago, did she?"
Julian looked up at her, his gray eyes filled with a terrifying mix of grief and fury. "She’s alive, Ellie. Arthur had her committed to a private, highly secretive psychiatric facility under a false name so he could seize her inheritance and control her family’s stock in Vance Holdings."
Eleanor gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. The sheer level of depravity was staggering. "Julian... oh God, Julian..."
"Arthur told the world she was dead so no one would ask questions," Julian said, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his fist. "Howard knew. Howard helped him forge the Swiss medical documents thirty years ago in exchange for Arthur funding the startup capital for Dawson Global. My father’s entire empire was built on the living imprisonment of my mother."

Eleanor wrapped her arms around his neck, holding him tightly as she felt his body shake with years of suppressed pain.
"We’re going to get her back," Eleanor swore fiercely, her voice burning with unstoppable conviction. "We are going to bring her home, Julian. And we are going to burn Arthur Vance’s world to the ground once and for all."
